AUGUST 2019 AFFILIATED WITH AMERICAN ORCHID SOCIETY & FLAMINGO GARDENS BOTANICAL GARDENS & WILDLIFE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Happy Birthday FGOS Let’s celebrate 30 years of success as an Orchid Society! Our mission has always been to share educational information to those who are interested in the growing and appreciation of different species of orchids, through our monthly speaker presentations, Orchid Show & Tell displays and other activities. It is about learning something new, whether it is about a certain genera or tips and tricks to try. Best of all - is being with other orchid fans and making an orchid friend! The Membership Drive for renewals begins this month. Just a reminder - the FGOS year is from September 1st – August 31st of each year. The membership renewal fee is still only $25.00. One of our members said, “This is a great deal, where else can you see these great programs at such a bargain price!” The Society always has the cost of Speaker fees, room rental fee, orchids for the raffle table and other supplies for our meetings. We are fortunate to be able to give every member, with an active membership, an orchid at our Holiday Party in December. We continue to strive to make our society something that you want to be a part of. Our Election of Officers is coming up in September. The Election Committee this year is Marcy Schwartz, Mary Lathrop and Antonio Torres. We have a full Slate for the board I am happy to report. The Election Committee will present the Slate at the August meeting. We are so fortunate to have dedicated people to serve on the board. Are you interested in being on a Committee? We need members to step up to help on a variety of committees, either as the chairperson or as a co-chairperson. This is a way to find out if you might like to serve on the Board as a Trustee in the future! The Society is looking for volunteers to take part in the various committees: The Raffle Table Committee, Host Committee, Sunshine Committee, Silent Auction Committee, Show & Tell Committee are just to name a few… We will have a detailed description of the various committees that we are looking to fill. With the growth of the FGOS I know that some of you are interested in getting more involved so why not volunteer some of your time! Your help will be greatly appreciated, and I know there is hidden talent out there. Come on, Try it, You’ll like it! With the suggestion of taking up a collection for the NEW Learning Center we collected $151.00! Hopefully we will be able to use the NEW Learning Center by next summer. Thank you for hanging out with the Dinosaurs in the Gallery. This is our last month with these amazing prehistoric fossils! Looking forward to celebrating FGOS’s Birthday with you all and having some cake at the Monday, August 12th meeting! See you at meeting – Jan

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Happy Birthday FGOS Let’s celebrate 30 years of success as an Orchid Society! Our mission has always been

to share educational information to those who are interested in the growing and appreciation of different species of orchids, through our monthly speaker presentations, Orchid Show & Tell displays and other activities.

SPEAKERS’ ARTICLE by Sandi Block-Brezner, 1st V.P.

Melana and Jim Davison from Miami will be presenting to us on Laelia anceps at our meeting on Monday night, August 12th! Both Melana and Jim are AOS Accredited Judges and have an extensive and diverse orchid collection that seems to be continuously growing. Not only involved in caring for their orchids, they are actively involved in several South Florida orchid societies. Melana is the current President of the Orchid Society of Coral Gables and past President of the South Dade Amateur Orchid Club. Jim is the past President of the Orchid Society of Coral Gables and the East Everglades Orchid Society.

Jim’s appreciation for orchids stems from his scientific background. Before his recent retirement, he worked as a Nuclear Chemistry Manager at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant. Melana is more interested in the aesthetic qualities of orchids, especially the ones that look strange and other worldly. She owns her own Orchid Maintenance business and is known as “The Orchidiva.” They have recently opened their own retail nursery, Jim-N-I Orchids, and are preparing a new greenhouse and shade area. Together, Jim and Melana have seven grown children and five grandchildren. They live in Homestead with their two dogs, four of the five grandchildren, and 5,000 plus orchids in their personal collection! They specialize in Laelia anceps, Cattleya walkeriana, Cattleya aclandiae, and various Phalaenopsis species. Their presentation will showcase Jim’s favorite species, Laelia anceps! It is a native of Mexico, and is one of the most common, yet one of the most satisfying orchids to grow. It is beautiful and hardy, and its ease of care makes it an ideal plant for the beginner as well as the connoisseur. Aspects of both the species and the hybrids will be discussed. Melana and Jim will be supplying our raffle tables and will have an extensive collection of orchids for sale as well! You won’t want to miss this informative and exciting presentation!! See you there! Sandi

Orchid Care: What Are the Different Parts of Your Orchid Plant?

Orchid names and even their various parts can sound too exotic sometimes that they can be confusing. It’s easy for a budding orchid enthusiast to feel a bit lost in translation when buying a new orchid plant or asking an expert about a question related to orchid growing.

Luckily, we’re here to help you with that. Expand your vocabulary and get to know your orchid plants up close.

Bloom Our favorite and the most beautiful part of the orchid are, of course, the blooms or the actual flowers. Depending on the type of orchid plant, blooms come in a vast array of colors and sizes. Orchid blooms have different parts, too, such as:

Sepal – The outermost flower parts. The sepal at the top of the flower is called dorsal sepal while the two at the bottom are called lateral sepals.

Petal – The innermost part of the orchid bloom. There are three petals in an orchid flower: two on each side plus the lip or the labellum.

Lip – The lip is a standout petal. It’s the most eye-catching part of an orchid bloom, especially in cymbidiums or cattleya orchids. In nature’s process of pollination, the lip usually serves the purpose of the landing strip for pollinating insects, such as bees.

Column – It’s the fleshy part in the center of the orchid flower that holds the vital reproductive parts.

Buds The buds refer to the baby orchid flowers before they open up or bloom.

Keiki Keiki is a Hawaiian term, which means baby, that is used to refer to the offshoot or the tiny plant that develops from a mature orchid plant’s spike or cane.

Pseudobulb The thick part of the stem found in cattleya orchids, dendrobium orchids, and other types of sympodial orchid plants. Pseudobulbs are essential because they act as storage houses of food and water to sustain the orchid plant during dry conditions.

There are two types of orchid pseudobulbs:

Front bulbs – These pseudobulbs can be seen on the younger part of the plant and are actually the actively growing part where flowers will sprout from.

Back bulbs – These are old pseudobulb on the lower part of the plant. When they are green, even with no more leaves, they provide significant nourishment to the orchid plant. They can also be used sometimes to propagate new orchid plants. Sheath The tube-shaped base of the leaf surrounding the flower spike. It encloses emerging inflorescence. Cattleya orchid buds actually come out from a sheath.

Inflorescence This refers to the flowering part of the plant and is sometimes more commonly known as the spike. Usually, an inflorescence has other parts, such as peduncle, pedicle, and the orchid bloom itself.

There are several types of inflorescence in orchids. This includes:

Raceme – A Phalaenopsis orchid blooms of a raceme, which is a type of an inflorescence with short-stalked flowers and can be either upright, arched, or trailing.

Scape – A simple inflorescence where one flower grows at the top. An excellent example would be the Paphiopedilum orchids or lady slipper orchids.

Leaves They may look all the same to you but orchid leaves differ depending on the orchid type. They can be thin and long as seen in oncidium orchids; fleshy as the leaves of a phalaenopsis orchid, or hard and waxy as that of a dendrobium and cattleya orchid.

The leaves are the best indicator if your orchid is getting enough light. Yellowish leaves mean your plant is getting a sunburn, while dark green leaves mean it’s getting too little light. Generally, a healthy orchid plant should have grassy, yellow-green leaves.

Roots Found at the bottom part of the orchid plant, the roots consist of the wiry filaments that absorb water and nutrients in the air. Actively growing orchids have green or sometimes reddish root tips. The longer the green tips are, the faster your orchid is growing.

Stem/Spike The long stalky part of the plant where the leaves and the flowers are attached to.

Stake This refers to the wooden or plastic stick that supports the orchid spike. We use midollino wires or sticks for our orchid arrangements.
