“The tract which thus came into their possession is a spot which, for natural beauty and for the purposes

of such an institution as they proposed, is unsurpassed.

About midway of the east bank of the Upper Nashotah is a level plateau, elevated about sixty feet

above the water, and containing about ten acres. From this the ground falls

rapidly to the north, and in small ridges towards the south, while on the east it is bounded by a ridge

somewhat higher, beyond which is level country for a short distance.

Here was the natural site for the institution, and here the buildings have been erected.”

This is how Professor John Egar describes the beginnings of Nashotah House (quoted in Imri N. Blackburn, Nashotah House: A History of Seventy Five Years unpublished, 1966). It seems appropriate to open my report to you as we are in the 174th year of ministry in this spot. It continues to be the natural site for this institution and the work begun here so long ago continues with vigor and vision.

The history was celebrated last summer when Nashotah House was added to the State Register of Historic Places by the Wisconsin State Historical Society. The State Historic Preservation Committee designated Nashotah House as an historic district, because the campus has eleven buildings of historical significance, and because of its status as the oldest degree granting institution in Wisconsin. The Committee also submitted a nomination for the House to become listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One Committee member called the House “a substantive contributor to the history of education in the state,” since its campus in the mid-19th century “was comparable to that of the University of Wisconsin.” That accolade comes because of Bishop White Hall, which stood four-stories tall, and was the tallest building between Milwaukee and Madison at the time.

Next year we will celebrate the 175th anniversary of this venerable place which has managed to survive many different crises since it was conceived in the missionary vision of Jackson Kemper, the first Missionary Bishop of the Episcopal church, and brought into being by James Lloyd Breck, William Adams, and John Henry Hobart, Jr. In honor of this milestone we have taken as our motto: Rooted in Tradition – Forward Thinking. Kemper had a vision and a heart for the mission territory of the rapidly opening American West and now we must continue the work for a different time and culture, but one still just as much in need of the message of the Gospel.

We are rooted in “the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3), but constantly looking to find ways to reach out to bring that faith to our world. Our hybrid-distance program is a good example of being both rooted and forward thinking. The hybrid-distance program is a unique combination of on-campus, intensive education and on-line coursework. The intensives provide quality personal interaction with faculty, along with the spiritual formation of daily liturgical worship, community meals, and shared life. The program allows the House to reach students who might not be able to otherwise engage in theological education. The Association of Theological Schools approval of the Master of Pastoral Ministry (MPM) now opens the door to an equivalent Master of Divinity by hybrid-distance.

Other decisions made in the 2015-2016 year have enabled the House to continue its work in new and more effective ways. The governance of the House was restructured to better comply with the standards of the Association of Theological Schools, and function more efficiently. The House entered into an historic arrangement with the Faye Gehl Foundation that maximized the asset of the agricultural land, while also assuring it would remain farmland. The Alumni Communities were formed so that the House might be of greater service to its graduates, and that there might be better communication. Rooted…forward thinking….Nashotah House.

It has been a busy year and the 175th is just ahead. We celebrate the past, but are committed to the future. The vision that led Kemper to recruit those three young seminarians and bring them West is still vital. The work continues, and we continue to rely on those who share the vision, hold the Gospel dear, and know that it is the Lord who guides the future. Together we will carry on the work and Nashotah, and its mission, will flourish.

THE VERY REV. STEVEN A. PEAY, PHD

With gratitude to God for a good year past and an even better one ahead, I remain: Yours in the Lord’s service,

The Very Reverend Steven A. Peay, PhD20th Dean and PresidentProfessor of Homiletics and Church History

I am pleased to report to you on the generosity of our friends, alumni, parishes, and dioceses for fiscal year 2016. Whether you funded a scholarship or made an annual gift to support our programming, faculty, technology or capital needs, your gift is valued and appreciated.

Thanks to you and others like you, over $900,000 in annual fund contributions were received, an increase of over 22% over the prior year. The number of gifts received also increased by 22%, with a total of 1,321 generous investments, which significantly enhances the House’s ability to serve its students.

An additional 257 gifts also contributed $373,816 for specific student scholarships. These scholarships are critical for the 95% of our residential students and 60% of the balance of our students who require financial aid. In fact, the lack of substantial scholarship support is the number one reason why students are unable to pursue a theological education. Uncertainty about rising debt contributes to students’ reluctance to even consider theological education and ministry as a viable career since compensation for clergy and other church professionals is modest at best.

In addition, the House received 7 Ultimate Gifts in 2016 totaling $500,000. These gifts were received as a result of the generosity and foresight of individuals who cared about the future needs of the broader Church and enabling those who are called to answer and serve others. Estate gifts will be earmarked for the House’s endowment upon the request of the donor. This insures that these gifts will be available to fund specific needs in perpetuity.

Thank you for your generous support of Nashotah House. As a valued and important financial guardian, you have sustained the House’s good work for God’s kingdom yet another year.

More than that, you have empowered students to embrace God’s call, and lead lives of character and service. Your gift extends this legacy to the next generation.

DIANE SIMONS PLANTENBERG, CFRE

Wishing you and yours every blessing,

“Constrained by the undying love of Christ to love the immortal souls of our fellow beings-let us be ready for the privilege, if it is ever conferred, to scatter the precious seed on every field-to erect the banner of the cross on every mountain.” Bishop Jackson Kemper, 1841

The Jackson Kemper Annual Fund recognizes and pays tribute to Reverend Kemper, the First Missionary Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The Reverend is known for planting missions to spread the word of God. Nashotah House, through its mission to form ordained and lay leaders for the Church, continues his legacy. Philanthropy is critical to the House’s work. Your unrestricted gifts enable us to cover the gap between the tuition and fees students are able to pay and the funding required to continue our mission. We thank you on behalf of our students and those whose lives they will touch.

Twenty four matriculating students signed the registration book, pledged to abide by the seminary rules and practices and to support the

institution. Matriculation has been observed at British Universities since the Middle Ages, and at Nashotah House since the 1880s.

The fall symposium featured The Rev. Dr. George Westhaver, Principal of Pusey House in Oxford, speaking on the topic “Sacramental Participation & Spiritual Formation as the Heartbeat of the Parish”.

Dr. Garwood P. Anderson, Professor of New Testament and Greek at Nashotah House, spoke at a Bible Symposium hosted by the Cathedral of All Saints, Albany, NY.
