We are currently seeking a new VP, so if you are interested please contact me. For my first newsletter, I wanted to share my experience with the Piedmont Aero Club, and my hopes for the future. Aviation is one of the coolest hobbies, and for any of us involved with aviation we are able to live in a different world. For me, the Piedmont Aero Club has been great in the following areas: From our monthly programs (to resume in September) and our monthly newsletters, I have learned so much from others’ experiences, challenges, etc. Meeting the aviation community of the Triad. Opportunities for continued learning. Shame on me, though…To this point, I have yet to take full advantage of our fly-in’s or trips (or other events). That will change immediately. For example, I am leading a trip to Tangier Island, VA on Sunday (8/17), and if you have questions about that trip then please e- mail me. There are so many opportunities for aviation enthusiasts, and we as a club should take advantage of those programs. If you have a plane, we would love for you to allow others to ride with you to those destinations. If you want to rent our club plane, it will be available. If you are not sure how you would get to a destination but want to attend, please let us know. We will do everything possible to work it out. (Certainly, one can drive to local events.) Between now and winter weather, we will work to have many fun activities. If you have ideas and/or are interested in leading a trip, please contact me for the established protocol. Your new president, Eric Perdew

President’s Message

Now Sitting In The Left Seat…… In pilot lingo, we all know that means the pilot in charge. I have now become the PIC of the Piedmont Aero Club. Bud Marshburn has been vital to the Piedmont Aero Club for many years, and he has served us well through his presidency. Unfortunately, Bud’s time commitments and work responsibilities have forced him to scale back his participation. Fair Winds and Congratulations to

Ramone and Shannon

On Tuesday, June 10th, the Piedmont Aero Club

said “Fair Winds” to one of our most active

members, as he moves on for new adventures with

his new “bride to be.” We want to congratulate

Ramone and Shannon on their recent

engagement, and their new adventure going west

to New Mexico.

Ramone has been a very active member in the

Club, earning both his Private Pilot’s Certificate and

most recently his Instrument Rating, both through

the Club. He has also been our Website

Administrator and has enhanced the Club’s

presence in the web world. I’ve always been

amazed with his abilities and what he has done to

support the Club.

Most recently, Ramone proposed to Shannon, and

as you can see from the photos, he has found a

good one, as they both thoroughly enjoy aviation,

and the adventures that it brings. We wish them

both congratulations on their engagement, and at

the same time we will miss them dearly and what

they have brought to the Club, our lives and

forever our friendship.

A friend once told me….”With a mile of highway,

you’ve only gone a mile somewhere, with a mile of

runway, you have endless miles of adventures in

front of you.”

PAC President Makes Airlift Hope/Angel

Flight Newsletter

“Making a Difference Through Flight” Our own, Eric Perdew, made the recent newsletter for Airlift Hope/Angel Flight. Eric is very involved pilot (aviator) and continues to provide valuable service in flying patients to specialized treatment. Without the Angel Flight pilots, many of these needy individuals and children would not get to their specialized treatments, of which many are life altering or life-saving. Eric has been very involved and has flown more than 42 missions for Airlift Hope (NC Branch of Angel Flight). Eric is a partner-owner of a Piper Dakota (N102LC), and has made many of these trips, while exploring new airports. This month, Eric made the newsletter that goes out to all Mission Command Pilots and members of Angel Flight Mid Atlantic. Congratulations to Eric on another “giving” mission. Contact Eric Perdew or Jon Wells for more information on how to become a Mission Pilot.

Landmark Aviation acquires assets of Atlantic Aero at PTI

Triad Business Journal June 30, 2014

Landmark Aviation, a Houston, Texas-based company that provides a variety of services including fueling at Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem and Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, has purchased the assets of Atlantic Aero, a similar business at PTI well-known for its maintenance support services for a variety of aircraft. The deal completed last week adds to a series of acquisitions and expansion announcements made by Landmark which partnered with global equity firm The Carlyle Group in 2012 to expand and modernize its existing network and add new locations through acquisitions. The deal also combines two of the Triad's largest fixed-based operators in a move that strengthens Landmark's footprint in the region. Donald Brookshire, general manager of Landmark Aviation at PTI, referred all questions about the deal on Monday to the company's corporate office, which declined to comment. PTI officials confirmed that the company took over the lease of Atlantic Aero as part of an acquisition of the company at the airport last week. Kevin Baker, executive director of PTI, said that the airport's authority provided its consent at a Tuesday board meeting for the transfer of Atlantic Aero's leasehold over to Landmark Aviation. According to the most recent Triad Business Journal research, Atlantic Aero had 85 employees at its PTI location and Landmark had 30 at its PTI location. Baker said he did not know how the deal would impact employees but said he was sure the two companies would find efficiencies somewhere. Baker said Landmark's forte at PTI is on the fueling side while Atlantic Aero has carved out a strong niche in aviation maintenance at the airport. "From that standpoint, the two are somewhat complementary," Baker said Both companies have been growing their bases in the Triad over the past year. Atlantic Aero, which as of last year had 112,500 square feet of enclosed hangar space at PTI, had been considering an expansion of its hangar space at the airport to accommodate increased demand specifically from large corporate aircraft coming from other states.

Meanwhile, Landmark Aviation last year purchased an approximately 50,000-square-foot corporate hangar from Reynolds American at Smith Reynolds Airport for $1 million to house additional aircraft and better serve customers. It was a much more modern facility than Landmark's previous property at 3820 N. Liberty St., a 75,419-square-foot hangar that the Airport Commission of Forsyth County now owns and is marketing to potential tenants. Landmark said at the time that it was enjoying an uptick in sales and had been fortunate to win several government contracts. http://www.bizjournals.com/triad/blog/2014/06/landmark-aviation-acquires-assets-of-atlantic-aero.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+vertical_54+(Residential+Real+Estate+Industry+News).

Achieving your ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) Certificate – New

Regulation Changes By Jon Wells

On June 6th, 2014, I had the opportunity to achieve a life-long goal of completing my ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) Certificate. Often associated as your “doctorate” in flying, it was a challenging opportunity, as I studied months for the Written (Knowledge) exam and then flying and preparing for the oral and practical portion of the exam. It finally happened….but, had there not been new regulation changes soon upon us, I may have delayed it. When I say regulation changes, what does that mean? Essentially, two new regulations are affecting the airlines as well as anyone wanting to further their airplane knowledge and qualifications when it comes directly to achieving an ATP Certificate (multi-engine). By means of the U.S. Congress and administered by the FAA, the first change came on August 1st, 2013, when both seats, Captain and First Officer, for the airlines, are required to have an ATP. This has affected hiring, due to the 1,500 hour minimum requirement (although some other special programs do exist for lower hours). The next regulation will take place this August 1st, requiring anyone that wants to even take the ATP Written (Knowledge) Exam to achieve a ATP Certification Training Program (CTP) prior to being allowed to take this portion of the ATP Certificate. What does the CTP consist of? Well, you must have taken at least 30 hours of ground from a certified training facility, as well as 10 hours of Level C or D Simulator Training, just to achieve this certificate which now allows you to take the Written Test. This will all go into effect August 1, 2014. The exact amount that this will cost, is yet to be determined, as well as where you can achieve this training however estimates are coming in around $15,000 to $20,000 for this training. Anyone that takes the ATP Written Exam, prior to August 1st, will be provided a 24 month window to complete the checkride, thus also achieving the minimum hours of 1,500 total hours, 500 X/C time with 100 hours PIC, 100 hours of night flight, 75 hours of instrument and 50 hours in class (Multi-Engine). Anyone who takes the test after August 1st, of which the CPT will be required, will have a written exam that is good for 60 months. (See FAR 61.153) As confusing as it sounds, I have included a chart to reference, if you want to pursue this rating. It is a rewarding experience and really hones your skills, so my bottom line, if you believe you can complete the ATP within 24 months, get on line, study and take the written prior to August 1, 2014.
