PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Hello all, Happy new club year! The board of directors has had its first meeting, and we’re looking forward to another great year in this hobby. First, a thank you to outgoing board member Pat Kelleher, for serving on the board for the past year. Your contributions both at the board meetings, and regular meetings, helped keep the club running smoothly throughout the year. Now, looking ahead, we still have a couple months to go until our annual Christmas party. In the meantime, we’ll be doing some more show-and-tell themes to encourage members to find unusual items in their collections that might not otherwise get brought in for us to see. This month we’re doing “aquatic coins”; coins having to do with the sea. All kinds of different options spring to mind including ships, fish, and famous sea-going explorers. Does anyone have an echinoderm on a coin? Maybe a regular coin that spent time in the briny depths before being recovered by modern day treasure hunters? There’s a lot of different ways to go with this, and I can’t wait to see what people bring in. Also, don’t forget that we only have a couple of auction nights left before the end of 2016. The second meeting this month, and our only November meeting, are our last two auctions until January. So if you have coins to unload before next year comes around, now is the time. It also might be a good opportunity to check a numismatist or two off your holiday shopping list (Ahem!…Subtle hint). Have some bidding money handy, as you never know what might turn up! Junior Program As we head into our next coin club year I want to say thank you to everyone

who helped our juniors in 2015/2016. This junior program depends on the

support of our senior members in the form of contributions, lending a hand,

behind the scenes work, and feedback. The kids come because they have an

interest in numismatics and also because they have relationships here.

Thank you for fostering that.

This month at the second October meeting we will be offering a short

activity on “Euros” for the older juniors presented by our own noted

numismatist and fun guy, Lloyd S. This will be held at the same time as the

current junior activities led by Sharyn B

Reminder: We will be making 15 Christmas bags for the

juniors for our Christmas Party and already have quite a few

interesting items donated over the year for this event.

Additional contributions of 15 like or similar items are

always welcome to give the kids extra fun in collecting!

Junior Challenge Question (Question provided by Aaron Brown)

Question: In what year did the U.S. Mint commemorate the 500th

anniversary of Columbus’ first voyage?

September Junior Challenge Question: Where do you think the word

“dollar” comes from? (If you don’t know, make something up!)

Answer: "Dollar" is the English version of the German word thaler.

Large silver coins from the city of Joachimsthal were called

Joachimsthalers. As the use of large silver coins spread to other cities in

the 1500's, the name was shortened to thaler. The spelling changed

slightly when translated into different languages, ending up as dollar in

English.

Membership Challenge Question (Question provided by Aaron Brown)

Question: What animal’s shell was commonly used as proto-money,

before the development of coins?

September General Membership Question: Who’s portrait was first to

appear on a Philadelphia-mint coin bearing the “P” mint mark?

Answer: Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands (r. 1890-1948). In 1941,

she appeared on 10 and 25 cent coins struck at Philadelphia for use in

colonies of the Netherlands during World War II. These were struck one

year before the first U.S. coins to have a P mint mark (the silver "war

nickels" of 1942).

2017 Club Medal Winner: Dairy Farming Congratulations to Lloyd Solomon for the winning

entry. Since the creation of Stanislaus County, Dairy

Farming and the making of dairy products have been

important part of the county’s economic well-being.

At various times in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s,

advertisements were run in many periodicals to entice

dairy farmers in the Midwest, Northeast, and South to

relocate to Stanislaus County to be dairy farmers.

In a 2013 report ranking the number of dairy cows in each of the counties in the

United States, Stanislaus County was ranked 3rd largest with 179,617 cows at a

value of $706 million.

The 2014 report of agricultural production in Stanislaus County lists the value

of the dairy industry (cows, milk products, silage, and manure) as

$1,402,648,000.00, or almost 32% of the value of all agricultural production in

Stanislaus County.
