Conserving Vancouver’s Heritage Buildings through education, public awareness and granting.
2004annual report
Vancouver Heritage Foundation
Preserving Vancouver’s heritage buildings pays tribute to the people and enterprises that built our city, and creates exciting spaces for
people to live and work.
Vancouver Heritage Foundation
2004ANNUAL REPORT
Buildings tell the story of a city, and Vancouver’s story is a lively mix of characters and styles. From turn of the century Strathcona cottages to Shaughnessy mansions, Chinatown storefronts and Yaletown warehouses, our built heritage reflects the people and the enterprises that shaped our city.
Each year more of our heritage buildings are lost through demolition, redevelopment or neglect. In 1986 there were 2800 heritage buildings on Vancouver’s Heritage Register. Now, 18 years later more than 700 of these buildings are gone from the register. Heritage buildings are an important cultural asset and their loss weakens the distinctiveness of our neighbourhoods and lessens our sense of attachment to the past. It undermines the attractiveness of Vancouver as a tourism destination, and it harms the environment through the waste produced when old buildings are replaced rather than restored.
The Vancouver Heritage Foundation is committed to leaving a legacy of heritage buildings for future generations through heritage conservation education, public awareness and granting activities.
by supporting neighbourhoods one building at a time.
Preserving our PAST for the FUTURE
The Vancouver Heritage Foundation was established as a charitable organization in 1992 by the Mayor & Council of the City of Vancouver. Its mandate is to supoort the conservation of Vancouver heritage buildings in recognition of their public benefit. Today the Foundation is flourishing under the leadership of its committed Board of Directors comprised of professionals from the development, architectural, design, real estate and communications fields, as well as individuals who have restoration experience and a general interest in Vancouver’s heritage buildings.
The volunteer Board is supported by an enthusiastic group of over 200 volunteers helping with special events such as the Open Vancouver Heritage House Tour. The Foundation is sincerely grateful for the generous contribution of these committed community members without whom our events and programs could not take place.
About the VANCOUVER HERITAGE FOUNDATION
Again another banner year for the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and
what a pleasure to be part of the organization! Along with the growth of our successful programs and events, we have made a big step forward by moving to our
own premises downtown. Thanks to the generosity of the Pappajohn brothers at Jameson Developments, we are nicely settled into the historic Royal Financial Building at 844 West Hastings Street. Being downtown has opened many new opportunities for us, especially as we move forward on our Building Heritage endowment campaign.
With two Open Vancouver Heritage House Tours under our belt, we are thrilled with the many positive benefits of this event. Margot Keate-West chaired the 2004 event with the support of a tremendous team of volunteers, house captains, home owners, florists and sponsors. Nearly 2,000 people had a chance to see inside ten wonderful heritage houses last June. This annual event has become our main fundraiser.
We continue to reach out to the public from our booth at the Home and Garden Show. True Colours, our best known granting program, helped a number of heritage houses get repainted in authentic colours
schemes. Our partnership with Benjamin Moore saw the publication of the first colour card, with national distribution, of Vancouver’s True Colours. Through a generous grant from Yosef Wosk, the VHF is working towards the restoration of the heritage lighting on the Burrard Bridge, one of the city’s premier landmarks
I have the benefit of working with a wonderfully supportive and diverse board of directors. None of this could be accomplished without the tireless efforts of our Executive Director, Diane Switzer, and her Assistant, Elana Zysblat.
Thank for your interest in the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and I urge you to support for our programs and fundraising efforts.
Best regards, Robert Lemon MAIBC, Chair

On the first Sunday in June more than 1500 people enjoyed this award winning, fundraising and public awareness event. Under the guidance of 150 dedicated volunteers, visitors moved from tiny row houses in Strathcona to Samuel McClure mansions in Shaughnessy. The tour opened the doors of some of Vancouver’s unique residences to share both their history and their loving restoration. The 3rd Annual Open Vancouver Heritage House Tour is planned for Sunday, June 5, 2005 under the leadership of volunteer Co-chairs, Margot Keate West & Joan Hebb.

The inaugural Sacred Sites Tour opened 8 churches, cathedrals and temples to more than 300 people for one day in December. From stained glass window tours, to organ and choir recitals and bell tower climbs, at each site visitors experienced the architecture, history and programs of a select sample of the city’s spiritual buildings. The 2nd Sacred Sites Tour is planned for November 12th and 13th, 2005 under the guidance of volunteer Chair and VHF Director, Lisa MacIntosh.

As a token of appreciation the Foundation gifted fundraising revenues from the tour to the participating congregations.

PRESERVING YOUR OLD HOUSEHow-To workshops for homeowners and professionals
Many homeowners are curious about how to maintain and repair their old house themselves, while many professionals are searching for assistance with a particular skill. In answer to the need, the VHF periodically holds workshops on specific maintenance and restoration topics. In the Fall of 2004, two sold-out workshops were held on the repair of double-hung windows and the restoration and refinishing of wood surfaces. What better place for the VHF to link with homeowners
than at the BC Home & Garden Show where 75,000 people interested in the repair, building and maintenance of homes and their gardens wander through hundreds of exhibits searching for answers and ideas.
From homeowner questions about registering their house as a heritage building in the City of Vancouver, to suggestions for era and style appropriate colour schemes for their houses, the Foundation and local volunteer experts spend five days raising awareness about heritage home issues. It is an excellent venue to reach out to people who might not normally seek out heritage solutions to their homeowner questions.

The maintenance and restoration of an older home is often an expensive and time consuming undertaking. Challenges such as trying to replicate lost details or converting what was once a rooming house back to its former glory as a single family dwelling are time consuming and expensive. In recognition of this hardship and to offer an incentive to preserve and maintain heritage houses, the Foundation offers grants to homeowners of registered and designated heritage houses.
GRANTS at Work
PAINT GRANTING PROGRAMTrue Colours is a highly successful VHF program that has received international reknown. Now in its 6th year this granting program has painted 35 houses spread throughout Vancouver in their original and authentic Vancouver historical colours. Underscoring this success, hundreds of other homes on their own initiative have copied the uniquely Vancouver True Colour schemes. Grant recipients receive a professional heritage colour consultation, complementary paint from corporate partner, Benjamin Moore Co. & Limited, and the Foundation awards a cash grant of $2000. All houses painted through the program are legally protected heritage buildings.

The small, terra cotta-clad gem, originally designed in 1929 by architect, J.C.Day for the Royal Financial Trust Company, is a perfect home for the Foundation. The VHF is grateful to Jameson Developments and the Pappajohn family for the donation of the space. Donations of furniture, office equipment and professional services were gratefully received from friends of the Foundation.

A NEW HOMEfor the Foundation
The Foundation appreciates the generous donations that made the move possible.
In partnership with Benwell Atkins printers, the VHF has its first calendar. With colour images of buildings built in 1905, the handsome 2005 calendar is formatted to fit into a CD jewel case which flips open to become a nifty desk top calendar stand.

The Vancouver Heritage Foundation is partnering with the Chinese Benevolent Association to raise funds for the restoration of the Association’s historic building at 108 East Pender Street in Chinatown by providing campaign administration services. Built in 1909, the CBA building is nearing its 100th birthday. To honour the illustrious history of both the Benevolent Association and its building, and as part of the revitalization of the entire historic Chinatown district, the CBA has plans to restore the front façade of their building.
Work has begun on design drawings to re-create the original façade of the building. The original parts of the front façade have been scraped and colour matched by the Vancouver Heritage Foundation to discover the original colour scheme of the building. The VHF is pleased to be assisting with this very worthy project.
