OBJECTIVE AND OVERVIEW
Following the successful completion of the four Summer Schools that took place between 2011 and 2014in various cities, successive Summer Program is organized for 2015 with the initiative of IRCICA and Al-Turath within the framework of its joint programs on urban studies and architectural heritage. The Program, in 2015, is an academic and practical program aimed to underscore the importance of preserving, promoting and encouraging the economic, cultural and touristic development of urban heritage in Islamic countries.
It is designed to complement the studies of advanced students as well as young educators and professionals with lectures given by key international experts.
Also, participants will have opportunity to visit important site from the UNESCO World Heritage List in the region.
In conclusion, education and training will be provided through the work in actual projects in architecture, restoration, urban design and planning.
The Islamic Urban Heritage – Research, Preservation and Management program will focus on: works in studios will be integrated with works on construction sites.
• Technical practice on site, and design of preservation and urban development projects; • Research, analysis and documentation of urban heritage sites and buildings as a basis for the
development of the “IRCICA-Prince Sultan bin Salman Architectural Heritage Database”
• Management, planning and evaluation of the economic and social impact of urban heritage and its conservation, and provision of appropriate financial solutions as a part of Preservation of the Historic Urban Landscape;
MODES OF OPERATION:
o Participants from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries o 44 students, 7instructors, 10 lecturers and several panelists-distinguished speakers o Each group (5-6 architectural senior students or young professionals, and one instructor) will
cooperate with one of the offices in charge for the implementation of actual projects o 20 working days including several studies field trips o 60 office hours, 45 construction site hours o 22 hours lectures and 12 hours presentations o Lodging double rooms, single rooms are available upon request o Coordination center is located in the city of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND CREDITS
The program is designed for 44 participants with under graduate, graduate students and professionals in architecture.
ACTUAL PROJECTS: Historic sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina with following ongoing projects:
1. HISTORIC RECONSTRUCTION:
1.1. Atik Mosque in Mostar (1474): Historic reconstruction not yet completed. Needs work on interior of the mosque, and complete surroundings of the mosque
1.2. Aladza Mosque in Foca (1555):the mosque complex totally destroyed in April 1992 A historic reconstruction started 01.april 2015, needs daily supervision

2. PRESERVATION PLAN OF THE HISTORIC SITES: 2.1. Old Town Blagaj, 10 km from Mostar:

3. DESIGN IN HISTORIC CONTEXT OF MOSTAR Four actual projects in the property listed on the world heritage list of UNESCO:
3.1. Sport and recreation center on the contact of rivers Neretva and Radobolja: Needs urban design of the area
3.2. Historic bazaar Mala Tepain the Main Bazaar Mostar:
The complex is under construction; need design of interior and landscape 3.3. Girls High school (1903)–historic reconstruction and new touristic function:
The complex is in ruin m conceptual design is prepared, needs additional phases
3.4. Hotel “Ruza” –construction of a contemporary building in historic context:
One part of the hotel complex is under construction
