Welcome to Walden NorthHenry David Thoreau wrote about Walden Pond in Concord Massachusetts, where he lived in a log cabin in the woods for over 2 years in tranquility, beginning in 1845. Here we have “Walden North”, the Canadian equivalent, being a 2.9 acre property located in an idyllic setting on a virtually private 300 acre lake ... where nature lovers can watch a parade of wildlife and kaleidoscope of plant & insects perform their wonders throughout the year.

Although the property doesn’t surround the lake, it has 342 ft of waterfront and is the only section on the entire lake that is not zoned Natural Area Protection (NAP – See page 26). The home is the only principal residence that’s been built beside it. The rest of the lake is bordered by a few farms. To think that you could find a magical lake like this, practically all to yourself, within 90 minutes of Toronto is almost unbelievable, and yet here it is, a diamond in the rough, hidden in a secluded location just N/E of Lake Simcoe.

The 3 bedroom, 1½ bath century home was built in 1910 by the Doyle family. It offers the owners plenty of charm and character. It was built with 6,000 pieces of quarried limestone from Longford Mills, nearby. The mature trees make for a lovely setting overlooking a 175-foot wide sandy beach perfect for relaxing. The fishing is phenomenal with lots of largemouth bass, pike and pickerel. The wildlife is prolific with moose, deer, mink, otter, turtles, loons and many varieties of ducks. Dragonflies perform a special dance for you in late May when they emerge out of their nymphs.


The 1,925 square foot 2½-storey home was built by Hugh Doyle in 1910. The original features include

hardwood flooring throughout the home, solid hardwood doors, wide baseboards and casings, crown moulding

above all the doors and windows and, of course, lots of historical charm. If you need more room you can

expand your living space into the approximately 600 square foot attic loft ready for your finishing touches.

Spacious Living RoomThe formal living room has ample natural light due to the three large windows, great for bird and wildlife

watching from the comfort of your dream home. Just off the living room is the convenient 2-piece powder

room that also serves as a main floor laundry room.


Formal Dining RoomThe formal dining room is separated from the kitchen by another feature,

the French doors, complete with glass door knob. In the foyer, there is a

beautiful large stained glass window at the bottom of the original solid birch

staircase. You will also find a built-in bookcase and the ‘hidden’ access to the

basement under the stairs in the hallway.

The country kitchen features modern cabinetry that includes a large pantry, a microwave nook, a breakfast

bar, sponge tip-out at the double sink and a telescopic, pot-filler faucet. The cabinetry is complemented by

the porcelain tile counter and backsplash. The large windows fill the room with natural light.

Master BedrromThe generous master bedroom offers plenty of space for a queen-sized bed with side tables and still leaves

room for dressers and a comfy chair.


At the top of the stairs is another original feature, the sitting room. This space is perfect

for a home office (great natural light), a library or reading room. There are two good-sized

bright bedrooms and a 4-piece bathroom with jetted tub and one-piece sink with vanity.

“Walden or Life in the Woods,” a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay

“Civil Disobedience”, an argument for disobedience to an unjust state.
