Welcome to Walden NorthHenry David Thoreau wrote about Walden Pond in Concord Massachusetts, where he lived in a log cabin in the woods for over 2 years in tranquility, beginning in 1845. Here we have “Walden North”, the Canadian equivalent, being a 2.9 acre property located in an idyllic setting on a virtually private 300 acre lake ... where nature lovers can watch a parade of wildlife and kaleidoscope of plant & insects perform their wonders throughout the year.

Although the property doesn’t surround the lake, it has 342 ft of waterfront and is the only section on the entire lake that is not zoned Natural Area Protection (NAP – See page 26). The home is the only principal residence that’s been built beside it. The rest of the lake is bordered by a few farms. To think that you could find a magical lake like this, practically all to yourself, within 90 minutes of Toronto is almost unbelievable, and yet here it is, a diamond in the rough, hidden in a secluded location just N/E of Lake Simcoe.

The 3 bedroom, 1½ bath century home was built in 1910 by the Doyle family. It offers the owners plenty of charm and character. It was built with 6,000 pieces of quarried limestone from Longford Mills, nearby. The mature trees make for a lovely setting overlooking a 175-foot wide sandy beach perfect for relaxing. The fishing is phenomenal with lots of largemouth bass, pike and pickerel. The wildlife is prolific with moose, deer, mink, otter, turtles, loons and many varieties of ducks. Dragonflies perform a special dance for you in late May when they emerge out of their nymphs.

The 1,925 square foot 2½-storey home was built by Hugh Doyle in 1910. The original features include

hardwood flooring throughout the home, solid hardwood doors, wide baseboards and casings, crown moulding

above all the doors and windows and, of course, lots of historical charm. If you need more room you can

expand your living space into the approximately 600 square foot attic loft ready for your finishing touches.

Spacious Living RoomThe formal living room has ample natural light due to the three large windows, great for bird and wildlife

watching from the comfort of your dream home. Just off the living room is the convenient 2-piece powder

room that also serves as a main floor laundry room.

Formal Dining RoomThe formal dining room is separated from the kitchen by another feature,

the French doors, complete with glass door knob. In the foyer, there is a

beautiful large stained glass window at the bottom of the original solid birch

staircase. You will also find a built-in bookcase and the ‘hidden’ access to the

basement under the stairs in the hallway.

The country kitchen features modern cabinetry that includes a large pantry, a microwave nook, a breakfast

bar, sponge tip-out at the double sink and a telescopic, pot-filler faucet. The cabinetry is complemented by

the porcelain tile counter and backsplash. The large windows fill the room with natural light.

Henry David Thoreau; (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist,

naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian. Thoreau is best known for his book

“Walden or Life in the Woods,” a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay

“Civil Disobedience”, an argument for disobedience to an unjust state.

Walden North ~ Inspired by Walden Pond

Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify.

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away.

The question is not what you look at, but what you see.

Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.

Original title page of Walden, with an illustration from a drawing by Thoreau’s sister

Sophia. Published August 9, 1854(Ticknor and Fields: Boston).

Walden; or, Life in the Woods

Walden North is very much like Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts pictured here.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I

could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish

to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary.

I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout

all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest

terms. ...” – Henry David Thoreau

“When I first paddled a boat on Walden, it was completely surrounded by thick and lofty pine and oak woods,

and in some of its coves grapevines had run over the trees next the water and formed bowers under which a

boat could pass. The hills which form its shores are so steep, and the woods on them were then so high, that,

as you looked down from the west end, it had the appearance of an amphitheater for some kind of sylvan

spectacle. I have spent many an hour, when I was younger, floating over its surface as the zephyr willed, having

paddled my boat to the middle, and lying on my back across the seats, in a summer forenoon, dreaming awake,

until I was aroused by the boat touching the sand, and I arose to see what shore my fates had impelled me to;

days when idleness was the most attractive and productive industry.” – Henry David Thoreau

Waterfront Living on a Beautiful Private LakeImagine, your very own virtually private lake at the end of the enchanted laneway framed by mature trees and powder

blue skies. You’re surrounded by the birds singing in the daytime and the loons calling to each other in the evenings.

Wildlife is everywhere and the lake is home to plenty of largemouth bass, pike and pickerel.
