I am grateful and humbled that Tabard is beginning its 15th season. 15th!!! You know, don’t you, that this, truly, could only have happened because you have been the other half of the partnership that makes live theatre the exciting

living, breathing experience it can be for both patrons and performers. Thank you!

In our 2015-2016 season, each of our six main stage productions will, in some way, look at what “Coming Home” means. Interestingly for Tabard, this next season begins our 8th as the resident and managing company of Theatre on San Pedro Square (TOSPS). We now have been at TOSPS longer than anywhere else. It is our home. So, the stories we will be telling will all look at “home,” each in very uplifting, humorous, touching and/or meaningful ways. And I’m proud to say that half of our season is made up of new works by local playwrights, some of whom you know.

I am excited to premiere Homeward Bound, An Orphan Train Journey as the first production of the season. This project has been a journey of love and collaboration for all involved. Although the concept is mine and I wrote the script and chose the music, there are many others who have significantly contributed to the final product. You will find their names listed on the Production Staff page. Working with these talented people has made this project an even greater joy, with a special tip of the hat to our cast of outstanding actors.

Since Violet last season, four members of our Tabard family have passed away: subscribers Rose Deterding, Susan Hyatt, Larry Saltman, and production volunteer Lupe Diaz. We hold them in our hearts as we begin this season.

Our designated non-profit for this production is HomeFirst, for the work they do providing assistance and services to homeless men, women, and children in our community.

Chloe Allen (Angelina), 13, is an eighth-grader at Peterson Middle School. Her recent credits include Sunday in the Park with George (Louise) with Foothill Music Theater, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Claudia Herdman) with Tabard, Annie (Lily) with Starting Arts, Falstaff (Pageboy) with Opera San José, and several productions with Roberta Jones Junior Theater. She has also appeared in local short films and commercials. Chloe studies acting and loves to sing and play acoustic guitar, ukulele, and percussion.

Sarah Dorsey (Aiden/Mabel) is 11 years old and a sixth-grader at Willow Glen Middle. She was born a singer and inspired to perform when watching Heidi at Children’s Musical Theater San Jose in 2013. Since then she has been in seven shows: Five with CMTSJ, Tabard’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and Les Misérables with Peninsula Youth Theatre. Sarah is very excited to be back with Tabard! In her free time Sarah likes to read, write, and complete art projects, as well as to sing and dance.

Emily Anne Goes (Yuen Mei/Elizabeth), a junior at Archbishop Mitty High School, began performing in 2008 and has appeared in over 25 productions including Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz (Children’s Musical Theater San Jose), The Genius of Leonard Bernstein (South Bay Musical Theatre), and Gabby in Crazy for You (WVLO Musical Theatre). Emily studies voice and music theory with Brigitte Doss-Johnson and dance with Marie Stinnett. She was honored to be dance captain for Irene (WVLO) this past summer. Emily enjoys assisting children’s dance classes.

Samantha Goes (Xiao Fu/Rosie) is in the fourth grade and is honored to be originating the role of Xiao Fu alongside her sister. Performing since age 6, her favorite roles include TiMoune in Tabard’s Once On This Island Jr. and Kaa the Snake in Jungle Book (Children’s Musical Theater San Jose). Tabard patrons will remember her “angel” in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. She studies dance with Marie Stinnett and voice with Brigitte Doss-Johnson. She recently received a “first class honors” for her Level 1 Voice evaluation with the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program.

Ginger Hurley (Brigid) recently appeared in Tabard’s smash hit Violet, in the role of Young Vi, and in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Other credits include Annie (Annie) with WVLO Musical Theatre; Oliver! (Fagin Boy) and Scrooge (Tiny Tim) with Cabrillo Stage; White Christmas (Susan Waverly) and You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (Sally) with Children’s Musical Theater San Jose; and You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (Snoopy) and The Wiz (Lion) with Spotlight Stage. She studies voice, acting, and dance, and sings with the award-winning Kirby Prep School Treble Choir.

Doug Baird (Projections Collaborator) is a Tabard associate artistic director and directed Tuesdays With Morrie; Starting Here, Starting Now; Making God Laugh; Looking Over the President’s Shoulder; Driving Miss Daisy; and Hold On to Love, and co-directed Love, Laughter & Linguine. Other recent directing credits include Irene, Bells Are Ringing, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and My Fair Lady at WVLO Musical Theatre. An award-winning actor, he will be remembered by Tabard audiences for roles in Lady, Be Good; Hold On to Love; The Little Prince; More Than Petticoats; and Fools.

Lauren Bevilacqua (Music Director) joins Tabard this season having served as music and/or vocal director for many local productions. An accomplished pianist, she has also played for many other productions. With a bachelor’s degree in music, specializing in music therapy, she is a Board Certified Music Therapist with the Certification Board for Music Therapists, Inc. Lauren has had a wonderful experience collaborating with Cathy on the world premiere of Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey, the first production in Tabard’s 2015-2016 season.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer, Director, Playwright) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. For Tabard she’s directed Scapin, Dames at Sea, The Gifts of the Magi, The Dog Sitters, Sabrina Fair, A Taffeta Wedding, It’s a Wonderful Life, Crossing Delancey, Babes in Hollywood, and the award-winning production of Trying. She created and co-wrote More Than Petticoats and she both directed and wrote Stompin’ at the Savoy; Bandstand Beat; The Duke, The Count, and Me; Love, Laughter & Linguine; and two plays in 10 in 10: Perspective in addition to Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. Cathy spends her non-theatre time training to be a certified yoga instructor through Almaden Yoga, with a focus on yoga for seniors.

Joyce Taylor (Jane Smith) appeared in Tabard’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and was the assistant to the director. Joyce has been part of Cathedral of Faith’s World of Arts ministry for 20 years, where she has performed in a variety of roles from narrator to demon. For the last nine years, she has been the Drama Ministry Director where she directs and manages Christmas and Easter productions, dramas, and scripture readings.

Ashley Wilson (Hazel) is in 8th grade at Bret Harte Middle School. Last seen at Tabard in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Imogene Herdman), she is thrilled to be back. Past credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie (Ruth Devereaux), Schoolhouse Rock! (Missy Bliss), and The Music Man (Amaryllis) with Children’s Musical Theater San Jose, and Santastic (Mingle the Elf) with Guggenheim Entertainment. She is a past recipient of the Gypsy Robe from CMTSJ. Ashley loves to read and is a proud Girl Scout.

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we do technically.

John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) is Tabard’s chief audio engineer and has designed sound for many Tabard shows as well as for TheatreWorks, City Lights, South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, and various clubs and bands for over 30 years. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist in numerous rock bands and in theatre orchestras. While at M.I.T. he studied acoustics with Professor Bose, and he holds a M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an M.B.A. from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.

Dottie Lester-White (Movement Specialist) returns to Tabard having previously choreographed Violet; Babes in Hollywood; A Taffeta Wedding; Lady, Be Good; Stompin’ at the Savoy; and Follies Concert Version. Other choreography credits include such companies as American Musical Theatre of San Jose, San Jose Stage, Foothill Music Theatre, and South Bay Musical Theatre. As a performer, Dottie’s Broadway credits include No, No, Nanette with Ruby Keeler and Coco with Katharine Hepburn. National tours include Hello, Dolly!; Cabaret; Mame; and No, No, Nanette.

Robert Lewis (Performance Stage Manager, Sound Board) returns after doing sound design for Tuesdays with Morrie and The Immigrant, running the sound board for Violet; 10 in 10: Perspective; and Starting Here, Starting Now, and working in technical roles for most of the shows in the last two seasons. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now a 27-year resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant. Happily married for decades, he enjoys singing and playing mandolin with his church music group.

Migi Oey (Scenic Painter) has been part of Tabard’s technical team since Bandstand Beat in 2011. She designed the set for the award-winning Trying. Her knowledge of the performing arts stems from photographing musicians to working with local theatres, schools, and corporate events. She is skilled at drawing, painting large-scaled murals and faux finishes, photography, floral design, textiles, and graphics.

Rover Spotts (Lighting Designer) is lighting his fourth show here at Tabard, following The Best Christmas Pageant Ever; 10 in 10: Perspective; and Starting Here, Starting Now. During the day he works in the IT and Performing Arts departments for a private K-12 school. He also works for the City of Sunnyvale’s theater and has designed shows for Sunnyvale Community Players, Lyric Theatre, 42nd Street Moon, Theatre Rhinoceros, and various other Bay Area theater companies.

Marilyn Watts (Costume Designer) has been Tabard’s resident costume designer since the company’s second season and designed the costumes for the award-winning Trying. Marilyn is also Tabard’s audience services director and is costumer for several theatre/dance companies. What brings an even bigger smile to her is anything related to I Love Lucy.

A note from Susan Sutton, President, National Orphan Train Complex, Concordia, Kansas:

I n 1852, over 175,000 immigrants arrived in America. In two years, the number rose to more than 250,000 with the port of New York being the main arrival point. Rapidly, the city became a “boiling pot” of chaotic and dangerous living conditions with widespread

disease, crime, breakdown of family life, and innocent children suffering in the slums.

In 1853, young Presbyterian minister Charles Loring Brace set in motion a model he had observed in Europe and founded the New York Children’s Aid Society, a public charity orphanage that took in homeless youth from the city’s streets. There, children were fed, clothed, schooled, and taught the basic ground rules of positive American life, including earning and saving money.

After a year, however, the population of the Children’s Aid Society was over capacity. It was then that Rev. Brace, in cooperation with the railroads, organized the first Orphan Train west. The year was 1854. Forty children of “workable age” were sent to Michigan, thus beginning the “Free Home Placing Out” program that operated successfully for the next 75 years.

A second large New York orphanage, the New York Foundling Asylum founded in 1865, was privately run by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. In the beginning, a basket was placed in the entrance where an unwanted infant could be placed with no questions asked. In 1872, “baby trains” were sent out with infants and small children to be placed with applicant families who agreed to raise the children in the Catholic faith.

In all, between 1854 and 1929, over 250,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children were placed out in what is known today as the Orphan Train Era. This period of mass relocation of children in the United States is widely recognized as the beginning of documented foster care.

The Orphan Trains are a significant part of our national history, given that one out of 25 Americans has a connection to an Orphan Train rider. It is the goal of our organization to spread this history to today’s generation and beyond.

National Orphan Train Complex... The Beginning, 2002

Creating a National Orphan Train museum in Concordia, Kansas, was the vision of a small group of area volunteers. Without the dedication and perseverance of these “hardcore doers,” this project would never have been finished, let alone started. Do you wonder

what motivates ordinary citizens to give so generously of their time and talents on a long-haul project such as this? My opinion is that they were driven by the uniqueness of the challenge.

Since Kansas is in the middle of the country and received roughly 5,000 Orphan Train placements, Concordia seemed a perfect location for a national museum honoring all children. A generous citizen had donated a depot building to help kick start the project.

Yes, it was the historic preservation of a structure, a 1917 Union Pacific train station, but it was foremost the historic preservation of a people. It was the children, staring out from black-and-white photographs — and the living riders we met along the way, and their descendants, and families who reached out to them — whose voices we heard. Our National Orphan Train Complex committee refused to let these voices go silent or be relegated to a forgotten cranny of America’s past.

Thanks to the work of many, our National Orphan Train Museum officially opened to the public September 17, 2007.

And now, thanks to Cathy Cassetta and Tabard’s production of Homeward Bound, the story of Orphan Train riders stretches well beyond Middle America. Thank you so much for helping keep this story alive.

Our Mission Statement: Founded in 2001, The Tabard Theatre Company is the managing and resident theatre company of Theatre on San Pedro Square. Tabard is committed to making a difference in the community through the arts by providing enlightening theatre experiences that are appropriate and affordable for audiences of all ages. Tabard is an inclusive environment where the community can participate in every area of the plays, musicals, educational programs and music concerts we produce. We champion new works, innovative interpretations and unique works rarely produced. With a specific focus on altruism and philanthropy, Tabard reaches out to the under-served, such as the blind/visually impaired and children in low-income areas, and donates a portion of each production’s concession proceeds to a designated local charity whose work is thematically related to each show.
