COURSE DESCRIPTION and PURPOSE
The SPS symposium will offer current information about the diagnosis, treatment, and management of chronic cancer and noncancer pain, insight into the business aspects of managing pain practice, understanding the compliance and coding implication of new guidelines, enhance clinical skills pertinent to the management of pain. They will feature content appropriate for professionals at several experience levels. Each year the SPS Scientific Program Committee carefully reviews current literature and attendees' evaluations in order to organize a scientific program which addresses a broad range of topics related to pain treatment. The 2012 Scientific Meeting is an arena for interdisciplinary exchange among pain scientists and healthcare professionals.
The course is designed for pain practice team members including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, nurses, occupational and physical therapists and others interested in clinical pain management.
By participating in this meeting and at the conclusion of this symposium, attendees can expect to achieve the following objectives and the successful learner should be better able to:
1. Describe various pain management models and modalities for cancer pain, palliative care, chronic pain, and interventional medicine.
2. Assess the value of psychology and physiatry in the multidisciplinary pain management continuum.
3. Describe current methods of treating cancer pain with medications; compare implantable drug delivery systems and spinal cord stimulation techniques for treatment of cancer pain.
4. Evaluate new trends and techniques in the monitoring of pain patient compliance with prescribed treatment plans.
5. Assemble and utilize the new guidelines and requirements for the safe prescription of controlled substances, and compliance with federal rules and expectations
6. Review treatment options and identify the psychological factors that have the greatest effect on the outcome of opioid therapy.
7. Develop adequate understanding of the new codes guidelines.
8. Summarize the rationale behind the FDA Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) plan and utilize recommended assessment, monitoring and documentation procedures for use of long-acting/extended release opioids.
9. Compare pharmacokinetics of commonly used anticoagulants, assess the risks and benefits for discontinuing anticoagulation, and apply current recommendations to clinical practice
ACCREDITATION and CREDIT
University Health Services Professional Education Programs (UHS-PEP) of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
UHS-PEP designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 11.0 AMAAMAPRA Category 1 Credits PRA Category 1 Credits TMTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Alabama Psychological Association - This program is sponsored by the Southern Pain Society, VCU Office of Continuing Medical Education and the Alabama Psychological Association (aPA). The Alabama Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. aPA maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. This program is approved for 11 credit hours for psychologists by aPA. Partial attendance, late arrival, or early departure will preclude the issuance of CE credits.
This continuing education activity meets the criteria of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. 1.1 CEUs will be awarded and recorded with the University

Tuition for the conference includes a course materials, continental breakfasts, coffee breaks, lunch on Saturday and other amenities involved in creating a comfortable and rewarding learning experience. A maximum enrollment has been set, so early registration is highly recommended. Written cancellations received by Friday, November 4, 2012 will be refunded less an administrative fee of $60. There are no refunds after November 4, 2012 but substitutions will be permitted.

The Royal Sonesta is constructed in the rich traditional French Quarter style, with gabled windows, double French doors and wrought iron laced balconies. The hotel is distinctively European and unmistakably New Orleans. All of the sights and fun of the French Quarter are at your doorstep. All sessions will be held at the Royal Sonesta Hotel located in the heart of the French Quarter on world famous Bourbon Street.
ReservationsA limited block of rooms has been reserved at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans for reservations received by November 6, 2012. The special room rate is $209.00 for a single or double and $239.00 for a triple or quad (plus 13% tax plus $2.00/day occupancy tax). This room rate is available 3 days pre/post the symposium based upon availability. The hotel check-in time is 3:00pm and the check-out time is 12noon.
If you wish to make reservations, please call the hotel directly at (504) 586-0300 and identify yourself as a participant of the Southern Pain Society to receive the special rate. Reservations made after the cut-off date will be on a space and rate available basis. Cancellation of reservations must be made 72 hours prior to arrival.
Hotel ParkingDaily parking for local attendees will be $15.00 for up to 20 cars per day so please arrive early to obtain a space. Valet parking is $36.00 per day for hotel guests.
