THEATRE SEVERN Saturday 18 November 2017, 7.30pm PRESENTS Music and Dance from Around the World Music and the Performing Arts at Concord College Music and the performing arts, play a key role in the creative life of the college and in the cultural and artistic development of all students. Because of the college’s international status there is a wealth of musical tradition and folk heritage from around the world. Our aim is to promote the enjoyment of many different musical and performing art forms and encourage all students, to discover their own means of self-expression through a wide variety of musical styles, drama and dance. A large number of students take individual instrumental lessons each week and are encouraged to prepare for music examinations under the guidance of a highly skilled and inspirational team of teachers. An even larger number of students take part in extra- curricular ensemble music making. Examples of their work are featured in tonight’s program. Gifted musicians feature prominently in the college’s concert calendar and are often seen leading their own ensembles. In addition, our most talented musicians are encouraged to enter for national and local competitions. A number of students each year proceed to study music at 14+ and 16+ achieving consistently excellent results. The music department is well resourced with a purpose-built auditorium, a multi-track recording studio, music practice rooms, and a music technology suite running a range of the latest sequencing and notation software. We are committed to nurturing a love for music in every student whether as a performer, composer or listener. Music trips and workshops are organised regularly, aiming to provide students with an opportunity to experience live music outside the classroom. Recent activities this term have included Jazz music, song writing and singing workshops. Students also have the opportunity to experience live music of the highest standard in our own theatre, by attending concerts which are organised in association with Shropshire Music Trust. Forthcoming events to look forward to will be, an all Schubert piano recital given by the acclaimed concert pianist Llyr Williams on 27 May. Tickets are available now from www.ticketsource.co.uk/smt. The annual concert of International Music and Dance presented by the students tonight is a notable feature of the college’s performing arts calendar. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALThank you for coming to Concord College’s Winter Concert. I hope that you enjoy the students’ performances and that you leave feeling a little more uplifted than when you arrived. Please remember that our students are not professional performers – far from it. They are young people from around the world who come together at Concord for a highly academic education. For many you will see tonight, this could be the first time that they

have performed on a big stage. Please bear this in mind. Also, for most of the students, their parents will not see this show, so please give them all the support you can – they will really appreciate it.

If you are not aware, Concord’s Music and Dance from Around the World Concerts have gone on for many years now. They are a fusion of a formal musical programme led by Concord’s Music Department and informal cultural and dance performances arranged and organised by the students themselves. This is education in the most important sense of the word: the students involved are developing their talents, their self-confidence, their team-work and

their sense of social responsibility with such an excellent amount of money being raised for good causes.

I am extremely grateful to all the Concord staff and students as well as to the WI and Rotary clubs who have made this event possible.

Enjoy the evening!

Neil Hawkins, Principal
