BACKGROUNDNOTEScont’d“Thebiggestchallengewastodecideon,notsomuchaformulaasablueprintonhowitwouldflowandfeel,”sayseditorAdrianRostirolla.“Thereweresomanyelementstojuggle.Itwasn’tjustaboutwhatfilmstoincludebutalsohowdeeptogo,howlongbeforeshiftingtosomethingbiographicalaboutDavid,howtobalancedarkermomentswithhumour.Overallit’sinformativebutthere’salotofcheekymoments.Webringouthishumourmorethanaudienceswouldhaveseenontelevision.”AjoyforthecrewThekeycreativeteamgreatlyvaluedtheopportunitytohearfirst-handthebackstoriesbehindsomanyofAustralia’smostbelovedfilms,tomeetmanyofAustralia’sfilmgreatsandtolearnmoreabouttheirowncraftasaresult.Itwasaremindertothemthattheysitontheshouldersofpreviousgenerationsoffilmmakersandactors,drawinginspirationfromthemtokeepgoing.“ItwassosatisfyingtoseelotsoffilmsI’dneverseenoronlyseenpartofanddissectthem,”saysRostirolla.“WhenwatchingPicnicatHangingRockIthought‘IbetthedirectorofDonnieDarkowasinfluencedby(director)PeterWeir’andIlookeditupandIwasright.”“Foradirectorofphotographyitwasadreamjobtoworkonafilmaboutfilms,”sayscinematographerKevinScottwho,likeDavid,isEnglishbybirth.“Davidputmeontoawholeplethoraofmoviesthatithadnevercrossedmymindtowatchfrom20,30,40yearsago,includinghisfavourite,Newsfront.”Scottfilmedeverythinginwidescreenwithcamerasusuallyusedforcinema,asifhewasmakingafeaturefilm.Thatwayallthefootagewouldcuttogetherwellandgiveviewersacomfortableride.“Todeliverthewholethingina2.39:1aspectratio(widescreen)isprettyrareforadocumentary,”hesays.Heusedwide-anglelensfortheinterviews,adecisionthatmakesthewell-litbackgroundsturnintopanoramas.Asaresultthoughthecamerawasalwaysaboutametrefromthosedoingthetalking.“Wewereshootingiconsoftheindustryandhadtomakethemlookgoodbutitwasabitscarylightingbignameactorsandsomeofthebestcinematographersintheworldbecausetherewasnopullingthewoolovertheireye,”hesayswithalaugh.“Theyknewexactlywhatweweredoingatalltimes.”DavidisoneofthemostresilienttelevisionpersonalitiesinAustraliaandthisishisjourneythroughthefilmsthatwereshapedbyAustraliabutalsoshapedAustralia.ThesefilmsalsogaveDavidanidentity.McGowanexpectsthatsomewillfindhimquitedisarmingfromthisnewangle.“Thefilmparticularlysubvertsexpectationwhenweseethatveryemotionalmomentneartheendwhenhetalksaboutthetimehismotherexpressedherprideinhim.I’vewatchedsomanypeoplewatchthatsceneandunconsciouslybringtheirhandsuptotheirhearts.”
