Tuesday, May 15 – FAIRFIELD GLADE / EN ROUTE (I) This morning we depart Fairfield Glade and travel by motor coach to Nashville International Airport in preparation for the United Airlines transatlantic journey to Rome, Italy. Wednesday, May 16 – ROME / SORRENTO (I,HD) As the sun begins to rise on the Italian coast we arrive in Rome where we’ll meet our Tour Escort who will accompany us throughout our vacation. Leaving the airport, we’ll travel south through the well-tilled fields and orchards of the Lazio countryside en route to the Amalfi Coast. Our day will come to an end as we arrive in Sorrento, where the incomparable geography combined with the town’s inspired 17th and 18th century architecture is a sight to behold. Thursday, May 17 – SORRENTO (Amalfi Coast) (B) Today we explore the jewels of the Amalfi Coast. We’ll begin with a visit to Positano, perhaps the most famous of the Amalfi coast villages and arguably the most charming. Its enchanting town center of delightful pastel-hued houses surrounds the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, its alleyways are lined with quaint, colorful shops and its beach is world famous. Next, we’re headed to Amalfi where we’ll enjoy a brief introduction to the town, primarily centered on the Piazza Duomo and via Lorenzo d’Amalfi. We’ll visit the impressive Duomo; its bronze doors, the first in Italy, were fashioned in Constantinople in 1066. Afterward, we’ll have an opportunity to wander the Via Genova and Capuano where the varied shop fronts, balconies and flower decked niches lead off the main street into quaint squares adorned with fountains. Our last stop of the day will take us inland to the rural village of Ravello. This romantic destination is the perfect place to get away from the rest of the world and lose yourself in the panoramic sea views. Friday, May 18 – SORRENTO (Isle of Capri) (B) This morning we leave Sorrento by ferry and travel to the Isle of Capri, enchanting visitors with the incomparable beauty of its rugged landscape. On arrival in Marina Grande, we’ll travel to breathtaking Anacapri where our local guide will take us through the picturesque lanes and artisan boutiques of the town before stopping to visit Villa San Michele, the house museum created by the 19th century Swedish writer and physician Axel Munthe, which boasts one of the island’s most panoramic views. Next, we’ll set our sights on Capri, stopping along the way at the breathtaking Punta di Tragara from where we’ll enjoy a scenic view of the Faraglioni Rocks. Following a brief introduction to the island’s main town, free time will be set aside to explore the Piazzetta Umberto, the charming little plaza in the heart of the island that is more often than not bustling with people. Enjoy a cappuccino at one of the cafes in the shadow of the clock tower and, of course, there is always shopping nearby. As our time on the Isle of Capri nears an end, we’ll descend by funicular to Marina Grande as we prepare for the return ferry to Sorrento. Saturday, May 19 – SORRENTO / SAN GIMIGNANO (Pompeii) (B,HD) Today we depart Sorrento and travel to Pompeii, the largest of the towns buried by the enormous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. As we’ll soon learn, Pompeii was covered mainly by ash. The scale of the tragedy in Pompeii was appalling; in what had been one of the most active and splendid Roman centers, life came to a permanent standstill. To this day, Pompeii is one of the most famous and visited archaeological sites in the world. This afternoon we’ll travel north on the “Highway of the Sun” as we make our way to Tuscany. With its manicured fields, rustic farms, cypress-lined driveways, and sun- and wine-soaked villages clinging to nearly every hill, Tuscany is the romantic image of Italy. Our destination is San Gimignano, one of the

most remarkable of all the Tuscan hill towns. Sunday, May 20 – SAN GIMIGNANO (Florence) (B) Julius Caesar founded the colony of Florentia in the 1st century on the north bank of the Arno. Today the city occupies both banks of the Arno River and is famous for its art treasures and glorious history. We begin our tour of Florence with a visit to the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s statue of David, a colossal nude of the biblical hero who killed the giant Goliath. Afterward, we’ll explore the heart of the city, beginning with a visit to the magnificent Cathedral adorned with green, red and white marble, and see the nearby Baptistry with its famous bronze doors, most notably the Gate to Paradise. From here, we’ll wander along the Via dei Calzaiuoli to see the Piazza della Signoria with its wonderful backdrop formed by the Old Palace’s powerful presence, before ending with a visit to the unforgettable Ponte Vecchio, the oldest surviving bridge in the city, built in 1345. Originally the domain of blacksmiths and butchers, today the Ponte Vecchio is home to visitors that come to admire the views as well as to browse among the antique and jewelry shops. As we’ll soon find out, walking the streets of Florence is like taking a voyage back in time. Monday, May 21 – SAN GIMIGNANO (Tuscany) (B,RD) A leisurely morning will allow us to explore San Gimignano, a virtually untouched medieval city-state where time seems to have stood still since the Middle Ages. Comprised of 14 towers, some over 165 feet high, all streets lead to the Piazza del Duomo where the Collegiate Church and seven towers of nobility line the majestic square. This timeless location is also home to the famous Piazza della Cisterna, named for the bricks laid in a herringbone pattern. This afternoon we’ll venture out to the Chianti Classico wine zone, the most famous wine making district in Tuscany. We’ll learn all about Chianti with an unforgettable visit to one of its “cantinas” or wine cellars and sample their production, followed by a traditional dinner with a full menu of fresh local products. Tuesday, May 22 – SAN GIMIGNANO / ROME (Orvieto) (B,HD)Today we depart San Gimignano and travel to Umbria where we’ll stop to visit the spectacular hill town of Orvieto, looking down from its cliff edged balcony over the vineyard dotted plains. We’ll leave our motor coach behind and ride the funicular to reach the heart of the town where we’ll have an opportunity to browse through the shops off the Corso Cavour and visit the Duomo, among the greatest of all Italy’s Romanesque-Gothic cathedrals. Afterward, we’ll be on our way to Rome, the “Eternal City” of the West and capital of the Republic of Italy. Rome rises from both banks of the Tiber River on the slopes of seven hills from where its mighty ruins and superb art have for centuries attracted the world’s people. Wednesday, May 23 – ROME (Monumental Rome) (B,RD) This morning we will take in Rome’s Monumental sites begin-ning with a view of the world-famous Colosseum, a masterpiece of classical architecture where fights between men and beasts, gladiatorial contests, races and simulated naval battles took place. Then we’ll stop to view the world-famous Trevi Fountain where King Neptune’s Tritons guard the sparkling waters of Rome’s most beloved monument. Next, we’ll visit the majestic Pantheon, dedicated to “all the Gods” as a celebration of celes-tial order, the most extraordinary and best-preserved ancient building in Rome. Our tour will come to an end in the Piazza Navona, Rome’s most beautiful Baroque piazza containing three fountains, the most famous of which is Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers. No other piazza in Rome can rival the theatricality of the Piazza Navona and its luxurious cafes.

Day by Day Itinerary

Thursday, May 24 – ROME (Papal Audience & St. Peter’s Basilica) (B) This morning you have the opportunity to attend a Papal Audience with Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square, allowing pilgrims and visitors alike the chance to see the Pope and receive the Papal Blessing. An Audience with the Pope consists of small teachings and readings mainly in Italian, but also in English, French, German, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese and other languages, before ending with the Our Father prayer in Latin. Afterward, the embracing arms of Bernini’s colonnades will draw us into the largest church in Christendom, St. Peter’s Basilica. Although we may see hundreds of elaborate and priceless works of art in St. Peter’s, none is as moving as the sorrowful Pieta, Michelangelo’s masterpiece in white marble. The afternoon is at leisure to explore Rome on your own. One of the great pleasures of traveling to Italy is having an opportunity to enjoy the regional cuisine and wine. Eating out is an important part of a Roman’s social life and consequently there is a wide selection of trattorie, osterie and ristoranti to be found around the city. Friday, May 25 – ROME / FAIRFIELD GLADE (B,I) This morning we say ‘arrivederci’ to Italy and travel to Leonardo Da Vinci Airport in preparation for the return journey home. No better time to reflect on memories of our Italian Adventure Tour that will last a lifetime and new friendships made along the way.
