Winter Lullaby .......................................................................................... PINKZEBRA

When the winter snow meets the world below, painting fields of white in the evening light,I will sing my song and it won't be long till you're sleeping through the night. In my arms you'll be safe from the cold. And the warmth of my love will surround you.By your side I'll stay till you drift away to my winter lullaby.

Though the winds may blow over hills of snow, and the frost may bite in the winter night. You will find your place in my warm embrace, and your dreams will soon take flight.

Another season passes on its way. Another day has come and gone away. But always know my love is here to stay. Forever in my heart.

Too soon for me the years go swiftly by. One day the time will come for you to fly. You'll dream about your life and so will I. The world can wait and see, for now you're here with me.

Please join us in singing this carolHave Yourself a Merry Little Christmas .......................... Hugh Martin and Ralph BlaneHave yourself a merry little Christmas.Let your heart be light,From now on your troubles will be out of sight.

Have yourself a merry little ChristmasMake the Yuletide gayFrom now on, our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,Happy golden days of yore.Faithful friends who are dear to usGather near to us once more.

Through the years we all will be togetherIf the fates allow.Hang a shining star upon the highest bough,And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

This, our season of joy, is also tinged with sadness. As we celebrate our 40th year, and Brian Leatherman’s 25th as our Artistic Director, we mourn the loss of Greg Marsh,

our Associate Conductor, colleague of 23 years, mentor, and dear friend.

Greg was a natural teacher — a gentle persuader — and a born story-teller, always with an instructional purpose. His students, whom he clearly cherished, featured in

many of his stories. Whatever the narrative, we understood that we singers are never too young, and especially never too old, to learn.

You may be surprised to learn that choristers sometimes go flat, but almost never in the opposite direction. Greg didn’t harp on that point,

but challenged us to make Brian say the one thing we have never heard: “You’re going sharp.” For Greg’s sake, and, of course for you, our audience, we will aim high.

Greg practiced what he preached. As a regular Chorale member, he sang with the same quality and commitment he asked of all his fellow-singers.

We were so lucky to have Greg with us for 23 years. We miss his wit, his warmth, and his love of singing, of us, and of life. We dedicate ourselves,

and our entire 40th season, to his loving memory.

Program Notes

Did you wonder about a seeming contradiction in the title of our program tonight, asking yourself, “What’s warm about a winter’s night?”

Good question! The fact of the matter is that no one wants to be out in the dark and cold. What does the traveler long for as he tramps over the snow? He wants to see those lighted windows and know that soon he’ll be inside with the fire dancing and the candles burning. Only then will the night be warm.

You’ll hear this idea pop up over and over again in tonight’s selections, starting with our first song and its lovely description of the golden candlelight and crimson embers along with the snow, mistletoe and holly. Children can hurry home when it starts snowing and warm their frozen hands. The festivities carry on, with our paired selections of Jingle Bells and Sleigh Ride. We’re out and about in the snow, riding in sleighs and getting overturned into snowbanks, but by the end of the ride we’ll be at a birthday party eating pie and drinking coffee. The candles keep increasing one by one in the Hanukkah celebration as we sing Ocho Kandelikas. And on it goes, with perhaps the warmest images coming in The Christmas Song, with its chestnuts, fire, and children staying awake to watch for Santa. (Along the way there’s a white Christmas and a blue one.) Listen for these and other images, along with some inspired silliness from Rudolph and King Kong. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

There’s another set of images woven throughout our concert tonight, not of a brightly-lit party scene but a smaller, quieter one, that of the manger in Bethlehem. We are told that it was “amid the winter’s snow” that a baby’s “pretty little fingers played in the straw.” Shepherds have been directed there by a holy light and an angels’ chorus. What light and warmth were there? We don’t know for sure. Did the shepherds bring lanterns? They seem to have come at night. Did the animals provide warmth? What about the star? Had that appeared yet? It’s not clear.

What we are told in our selections, though, is that there was glory around that child in the manger, with the happy dawn of redemption and a bright morning.

And we’ll send you out into the night with the lovely Winter Lullaby. The imagery of a baby sung to sleep on a winter’s evening and surrounded by love’s warmth mirrors tonight’s theme perfectly. Another day, another season pass on their way, but love endures.

And so we wish you a holly, jolly Christmas!

Cherry Creek Chorale Artistic Staff

Artistic Director and Conductor, Brian Patrick Leatherman, is enjoying his 25th year with CCC. During his tenure, the Chorale has doubled in size and greatly expanded its repertoire and collaborative activities. A retired music educator and very active choral conductor, he and Chorale accompanist Cindy Runkel have formed the Highlands Ranch Encore Chorale and the South Suburban Encore Chorale, non-auditioned daytime choirs for adults “55 and better,” providing a professionally run choral experience highlighting the social, physical,

and mental benefits of choral singing. Brian is an active choral clinician and adjudicator who has appeared as soloist with numerous choirs and orchestras including the Robert Shaw Festival Singers and the Robert Shaw Festival Chorus. Prior posts include directorship of the Pueblo Choral Society and the Douglas County Children’s Chorus.

Principal Accompanist, Cindy Runkel, is celebrating her 11th season with the Chorale! Cindy began musical training with her father while in kindergarten, then studied with Elizabeth Pastor, concert pianist and faculty member at The Cleveland Institute of Music. She served as accompanist for her award-winning high school choral program and received multiple college scholarships, including a full piano scholarship to Miami University (OH),

where she accompanied and sang in multiple ensembles, performed in two European concert tours, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree. Cindy and her Co-Founder, Brian Leatherman, are celebrating Season #5 of their two 5280+ Encore Chorales, now with more than 240 "senior singers"!

Assistant Accompanist and Director of The CherryTones, Debbie Johnson, grew up playing Beethoven & Chopin and singing Rodgers & Hammerstein! She has taught music and drama in both Denver and Tucson. Previously, she worked with two non-profits in India and founded/directed DenverWorks, an inner-city jobs program. She did graduate work at the University of Denver and received her Masters in Music Education in Arkansas. She loves the artistry, excellence, and FUN of the Cherry Creek Chorale!

Choral Scholar and Conducting Fellow, Marqus (Mark) Richey is 17 and a student at Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, CO. He has been involved in music for 12 years and plays a variety of instruments. His main passion is the choral arts, and he will be pursuing a career in Vocal Music Education and Entrepreneurial Studies.
