SCOPA President’s Reception Please make plans to attend the SCOPA President’s Reception on Friday, August 24th from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. During the President’s Reception the SCOPA will conduct the instillation of the new SCOPA Officers, present annual awards and recognize leaders within the Association. Officers will be inducted by Dr. Joe Ellis, past-president of the AOA Board of Trustees. Heavy hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine will be served.

Accommodations and Important Annual Meeting InformationMake your Reservations early! Room block released after July 27, 2012!The Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes will serve as headquarters for the Annual Meeting. Room rates are $174 plus tax. Wheelchair accessible rooms are available. Please be sure to notify the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes directly if you require assistance due to a disability. You can make reservations by calling 800-644-2881. Be sure to mention the SCOPA Annual Meeting to receive the annual meeting room rate! For those wishing to stay a little longer, SCOPA rates will be offered three days before and after the Annual Meeting. Check-in is at 4 p.m. and check-out is at 11 a.m. The Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort and Spa at Grande Dunes offers ample complimentary self-parking for attendees. Valet parking is currently $18 per day.

Annual Meeting registration fee includes: all continuing education, continental breakfast, refreshment breaks, luncheons, and receptions. ADDITIONAL LUNCHEON & RECEPTION TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED FOR SPOUSE/GUESTS. Name badges are used for admission to ALL social and food functions. Please be sure to wear your badge at all times and make certain the SCOPA has a list of names of guests and the events they will attend if you are purchasing additional meals. Registration fee is waived for 2012 Graduates who are newly licensed SC optometrists and members of the SCOPA.

Cancellations and SubstitutionsCancellations received by July 23, 2012 will receive a full refund. Cancellations made between July 24th and August 17th will yield a refund less a $75 processing fee. Substitutions are permitted at any time. Please alert the SCOPA office of any changes. No refunds will be given to individuals who attend a portion of the meeting. No refunds will be made for cancellations due to inclement weather. It is the policy of the SCOPA to hold all meetings unless weather conditions are extreme. If the SCOPA is forced to cancel the meeting in its entirety, liability is limited to the registration fee.

Continuing Education CreditsParticipants will receive continuing education credit based on the number of hours earned by attending sessions. PARTIAL CREDIT WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR COURSES. CEU cards will be issued with Annual Meeting registration materials and will be validated after each session. Each session is monitored according to SC State Board regulations. Monitors will collect CEU cards and will record any personal breaks taken. Anyone exceeding a 10 minute limit will not receive continuing education credit for that session.

Upon completion of desired number of re-licensure hours, simply return your CEU card to the Annual Meeting registration desk for monitor’s signature. You will be given a copy of your validated card for your records. It is the conferee’s responsibility to confirm that credit has been submitted to the appropriate State Board offices.

The SCOPA is not responsible for any fines or penalties assessed for continuing education that is not reported to the desired agencies. Per the SC Board of Examiners in Optometry policy, O.D.’s are responsible for keeping copies of their CEU cards if asked for an audit. SCOPA can no longer report hours for O.D.’s.

Attention SC ODs: The SC Board of Examiners will give SC ODs the option of counting CE Hours from the 2012 SCOPA Annual Meeting towards this year’s renewal or the next. Your hours can be designated, at your discretion, when you turn in your CE card at the conclusion of the SCOPA Annual Meeting. If you have any additional questions, please contact the SCOPA Office.

Featured Program Speakers

Dr. Stephen Beckerman is a graduate from Washington University in St. Louis. He received his Bachelor's degree in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering. His doctoral work was performed at the State University of N.Y. College of Optometry. He completed his fellowship at the Illinois College of Optometry specializing in Low Vision and Pediatrics/Binocular Vision. He is currently an Associate Professor of Optometry at the

Illinois College of Optometry teaching in the primary care and pediatrics/binocular vision clinics. With over 20 years as head of the Sports Vision program at the Illinois College of Optometry, and for his involvement with the AAU Junior Olympics Sports Vision Testing Program, he has been named Sports Vision Optometrist of the Year by the American Optometric Association. Dr. Beckerman is also an expert in Sports Vision and received the Craig McFarlane Award from Prevent Blindness America for designing the Special Olympics Screening Program.

Dr. Dawn DeCarlo is a graduate of the UAB School of Optometry where she earned both the Doctor of Optometry and Master of Science degrees. She completed residency training in Hospital-Based Optometry and Rehabilitative Optometry at the Chicago West-Side (now known as Jesse Brown) VA Medical Center and the Hines VA Central Blind Rehabilitation Center. Dr. DeCarlo is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry where she holds Diplomate

status in Low Vision Rehabilitation and is Chair of the AOA Vision Rehabilitation Section and a member of the NBEO Part II Exam Committee. She also serves on the review board for Optometry, Journal of the AOA. Dr. DeCarlo has previously held faculty positions in the UAB School of Optometry and Nova Southeastern College of Optometry. She is currently an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in the UAB School of Medicine.

Dr. Paul C. Ajamian is a graduate of the University of Vermont and the New England College of Optometry. He completed a two-year Fellowship at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, FL. Dr. Ajamian is the Center Director of Omni Eye Services of Atlanta, the nation's first optometric co-management center. He is past President of the Georgia Optometric

Association, past Legislative and PAC Chair, and now a trustee of the GOA. He has served as the General Chairman of SECO International program since 2002, and currently serves as Chairman of the American Board of Optometry. His popular column "Co-Management Q and A" has been running monthly in Review of Optometry since 1999.

Dr. Danica Marrelli received her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO). After completing her optometry degree, she completed a residency in hospital-based optometry at the Ft. Howard/Baltimore VA Medical Center in Baltimore Maryland. She is currently a Clinical Associate Professor at UHCO where she staffs the glaucoma and

ocular disease clinic, teaches ocular pharmacology, and serves as the Coursemaster for the Second Year Clinic, the Survey of Glaucoma Course and Rounds/Case Discussion Course. She also is the Director for the Ocular Disease Residency Program and the Family Practice Residency Program. Her memberships include the Harris County Optometric Association, the Texas Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association. Dr. Marrelli is a trustee for the Southwest Council of Optometry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and a Diplomate in the AAO Glaucoma Section. The Texas Optometric Association’s presented her with the “Educator of the Year” award in 2008.

Dr. Daryl F. Mann, President of SouthEast Eye Specialists, PLLC of Chattanooga, Tennessee, received his doctor of optometry degree from Indiana University and completed a residency in optometric medicine at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. He is a former assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Optometry and former Center Director of Omni Eye Services of Chattanooga. He was

named Tennessee’s “Young Optometrist of the Year” in 1988. Dr. Mann is Past-President of the Tennessee Optometric Association, past Chairman of the American Optometric Association’s Hospital Practice Committee, past-chairman of the AOA’s Medical Practice Committee, and a past member of the AOA’s Federal Relations Committee and Quality Improvement Committee. He also served on the AOA’s Co-management Project Team.

Keith Hayes with over 35 years in the optical industry Keith has experience in Retail Optical, Management, Sales and Consulting. Keith is a licensed South Carolina Optician for Eyewear and Contact Lenses and is certified by the American Board of Opticians and The National Contact Lens Examiners. Keith is also a certified Technical Speaker for the American Board of Opticians and currently is the trainer for the South Carolina

Apprentice Opticians. Keith is currently a Business Consultant with Essilor Laboratories of America.

Featured Program Speakers

Dr. William J. Tullo is the Senior Director of Optometric Services for TLC Vision. He is the leader of the Clinical Directors Advisor Group. In addition he is a member of TLC’s Clinical Advisory Group. Dr. Tullo received his undergraduate degree at State University of New York Stony Brook and his doctorate in Optometry from State University of New

York College of Optometry. He has served as Assistant Clinical Professor for ten years specializing in cornea and contact lenses and is currently Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor at SUNY state College of Optometry. He has maintained a private practice in his hometown Princeton, New Jersey over the past twenty three years. Dr. Tullo lectures extensively internationally on refractive surgery, cornea and child abuse. Dr. Tullo is a Diplomate Cornea, Contact Lens and Refractive Surgery for the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Tom MacMillan was born in Huntsville Alabama. He and his wife Ginger were high school sweethearts. Dr. MacMillan graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery Alabama. He then attended the University of Alabama School of Optometry in Birmingham graduating in 1993. Dr. MacMillan purchased the practice in Clinton

in the fall of 1993. Ginger and Dr. MacMillan have 3 children, Austin, Isaac and Carley. He resides in Clinton and is a very active member of First Baptist Church of Clinton. He serves as a deacon and a Sunday School Teacher. Dr. MacMillan is a member of the Lions club and the Exchange Club. In addition to his busy practice, Dr. MacMillan provides no cost eye exams and glasses to residents of Miracle Hill Mission in Spartanburg and the Good Shepards Clinic in Clinton. All of his offices collect used eyeglasses that he distributes to third world countries during his annual mission trips all across the world. In his spare-time Dr. MacMillan enjoys camping and hiking with his family, and racquetball. It is Dr. MacMillan’s goal is to treat everyone as family. By delivering the best possible care along with the best products, MacMillan Optical strives to provide each patient with excellent service, ensuring a truly fantastic experience in each of the four locations.

Dr. Glen Steele is a clinical professor and Chief of the Pediatric Service at The Eye Center at Southern College of Optometry. He has a private practice emphasizing the eye and vision care needs of the infant and child. Dr. Steele is a past president of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and a past president of the Optometric Extension Program Foundation. He is currently chair of InfantSEE®. He has lectured extensively

throughout the USA and internationally in the area of infant vision development and care.Dr. Steele was selected Tennessee’s Optometrist of the Year in 1999 and also as one of Optometric Management’s Top Ten Optometrists of the Decade in 2000. He was the first chair of Operation Bright Start -Tennessee, a program to emphasize the need for eye and vision care of the infant. In 2001, he received Southern College of Optometry’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2005, Dr. Steele was presented with Vision Service Plan’s Southeast Regional People First Award. Also in 2005, he also received G.N. Getman Award from the College of Optometrists in Vision Development for service to the profession and, in particular, a concern for all children. In 2006, he was presented a resolution by the American Optometric Association House of Delegates for his work in InfantSEE®. He also received Prevent Blindness Tennessee’ Lifetime of Service Award and the Armand Bastien Award from the International Congress of Behavioral Optometry. A Developmental Vision Endowed Scholarship at the Southern College of Optometry was established jointly in his name along with Allen Fors, O.D. Most recently, he received the William Feinbloom Award from the American Academy of Optometry.

Sharon Carter has over 20 years of optometric experience including working in an office as an office manager, sales and training for an optometric software company to consulting for private practices. She started her own consulting company, Eye Care Optometric Consulting (ECOC), in 2001 and personally consults in offices all over the country spreading her team building philosophy. She is very energetic

and enthusiastic and for more than 9 years has been speaking and motivating staff at state associational meetings, national and international conferences sharing her company’s philosophy of “provide the best patient care possible and the money will follow.”
