This collection of masterpieces for flute by French and German composers is just the right vehicle for the artistry of Paige Brook. Certainly the audiences who knew of this man's gifts by direct exposure to them over the 36 years he performed as a member of the New York Philharmonic will be pleased to hear him in a new role. So will many of his colleagues, who always hungered for him to have a larger role than an orchestrachair can provide.
The program opens with Debussy and Poulenc, two very lyrical and poetic French composers, both of whom hold special places in performers' hearts despite theircolossal technical demands.
The recording ends triumphantly with a stunning performance of a typical Baroque orchestral suite by Telemann. The essence of the musical traditions of France and Germany are captured wonderfully in this fine recording.

"...superbly idiomatic playing and equally wonderful recorded effect. Such an airy, buoyant sound! Such perfect reproduction of each instrument. I would rate this as one of the all-over best recordings I have heard in years." - Edward Tatnall Canby, 1984
