Setting the Stage

• The Abstract – Sets the stage for your presentation as it

explains to others the why behind your presentation

– It is the incongruence of the abstract and the actual presentation which is the #1 dissatisfaction of convention attendees

– Tip: • Keep abstract in forefront of planning and preparation

process • If changes, be upfront with the audience

Page 11: Presenter Development Series #1 - 2018 ACPA …convention.myacpa.org/columbus2017/wp-content/uploads/...Today’s Session • Things to consider as you begin to set the stage for your

Setting the Stage

• Reviewing your proposal: – Now that your proposal has been accepted,

you have the opportunity make adjustments and edits before December.

– Re-read proposal and incorporate any feedback as appropriate from the reviewers

– Make final decisions regarding content and delivery method

– Confirmation of co-presenters and panelists

Setting the Stage

• Audience Engagement – As you begin the preparation process,

consider how the audience will be engaged in the session

– Previous attendees have expressed frustration by the heavy usage of “pair & share”

– This will be the focus of the January 2017 webinar

Q & A Time

Setting the Stage • Understanding Inclusion

– Critical skill for you to be aware of items that can impact your presentation

• Example - Usage of Language:

– As a presenter, you need to be careful with the language used in your abstract and in your presentation

– Gender Pronouns:

• Shifting to non-binary pronouns – Instead of “him/her”, using “they/their” to be more inclusive

Page 15: Presenter Development Series #1 - 2018 ACPA …convention.myacpa.org/columbus2017/wp-content/uploads/...Today’s Session • Things to consider as you begin to set the stage for your

Setting the Stage • Example - Usage of Language:

– Terminology associated around Columbus and potential impact on Native communities

• Avoiding words that may be problematic – Exploration, Discovery, New World

• Blog posts by Dian Squire (http://convention.myacpa.org/columbus2017/improving-the-use-of-inclusive-language-in-convention-proposals-and-presentations/)

• By Cindi Love (http://convention.myacpa.org/columbus2017/indigenous-peoples-day/)

Setting the Stage

• Understanding your audience: – Convention attendees come from the United

States and other countries – Different types of institutions and

backgrounds – Be cognizant of examples that tend to be

only U.S. focused or those focused only on four-year public institutions

Page 18: Presenter Development Series #1 - 2018 ACPA …convention.myacpa.org/columbus2017/wp-content/uploads/...Today’s Session • Things to consider as you begin to set the stage for your

Q & A Time

The following comments were shared: • Another area of inclusion is to think about that

some of the attendees are not from higher education backgrounds. Being mindful of theory, names, and other jargon that might not mean anything to some.

• We will also make sure that during the

convention we inform the attendees about who is there and from what areas/schools

Page 19: Presenter Development Series #1 - 2018 ACPA …convention.myacpa.org/columbus2017/wp-content/uploads/...Today’s Session • Things to consider as you begin to set the stage for your

• Timeline for Presentation – Critical to begin to layout plan for completion

of presentation prior to March 2017

• Developing a timeline – Provide wiggle room for unexpected events – Timeline will vary according to Program Type

• Delegating of tasks • Impact of waiting until the last minute
