AWARDS• An all-inclusive term that

consists of any decoration, medal, badge, ribbon, or appurtenance bestowed on an individual or unit.

6 Categories of individual awards.

• Decorations

• Good Conduct Medal

• Service Medals

• Service Ribbons

• Badges and Tabs

• Certificates and Letters

Decoration

• An award to an individual for a specific act of gallantry or service

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   

Good Conduct Medal

• For exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity

• Awarded every 3 years of service for enlisted soldiers.

                                       

Service Medals

• An award made to personnel who participated in designated wars, campaigns, or expeditions; or who have fulfilled specified service requirements in a creditable manner.

Service Ribbons

• A portion of the suspension ribbon of a Medal, worn in lieu of the medal

• Not to be mistaken for a Training ribbon such as the Army Service Ribbon and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon

Appurtenance• Appurtenance show achievement of

multiple awards bestowed on a soldiers or additional achievement.

Oak Leaf Clusters, Numerals, Good Conduct Medal Clasp and Service Stars show multiple awards.

The "V" Device is worn to denote participation in acts of heroism involving conflict with an armed enemy

The Arrowhead denotes participation in a combat parachute jump, helicopter assault landing, combat glider landing, or amphibious assault landing, while assigned or attached as a member of an organized force carrying out an assigned tactical mission.

Badges and Tabs

• Badge – An award given to an individual for

identification purposes, or that is awarded for attaining a special skill or proficiency.

– An award earned for a special skill such as completion of Ranger school and Special Forces Qualification Course.

Certificates and Letters

• Certificates may be issued for – Certificates for decorations – Presidential Service Certificate – Vice Presidential Service Certificate – Certificate of Achievement – Certificate of Honorable Service (Deceased

Military Personnel) – Certificate of Appreciation for Active Reserve

Service – Certificate of Appreciation for Reserve

Recruiting – Certificate of appreciation to employers – Certificates for badges
