COST: Registration is $20 per day. Register by March 28, 2014 and receive 25 percent off ($15/day). Payment must be made prior to attending a class. To register, go to nfs.unl.edu.

CANCELLATION: Courses lacking a minimum number of students on March 28, 2014 may be cancelled. Substitutions and walk-ins will be accepted pending class availablity. Students registered in courses cancelled due to low registration numbers will be offered an alternate class or a full refund. A $10 administrative fee will be retained for all student-initiated cancellations. Cancellations received after April 11, 2014) will be refunded at 50 percent. No refunds will be made after classes start (April 26, 2014 at 0800).

Lodging and meals are also available in the cities of Crawford (3 miles east) and Chadron (27 miles east).

PARK PERMITS: Privately owned vehicles are required to display a valid Nebraska State Park Permit. Annual and daily park permits are available at the Lodge.

FI-210 Wildland Fire Origin & Cause DeterminationThis course provides a consistent knowledge and skill base for the wildland fire investigator (INVF). The concepts taught will help an INVF perform at an acceptable level on a national basis without regard to geographic boundaries. Students will identify the elements of the NWCG Fire Investigation Certification program, perform the common roles and responsibilities of an INVF involved in an initial investigation environment, practice wildland fire investigation methods, evidence collection and documentation processes in a realistic environment and identify the laws, regulations and related court procedures associated with administrative, civil and criminal litigation processes. 36 hours. Firefighters & Elected Officials - Their Responsibility in Fire ProtectionThis class is for those with the responsibility to manage the various facets of a fire department. Topics include Nebraska law and legislative review affecting fire departments and rescue squads; Nebraska state statutes regarding prescribed burning and your responsibilities; your role in evidence protection pertaining to the legal process and insurance resources; request for proposal process – How to get what you need; planning — future equipment needs, budgeting, bonds and insurance.

Taught by Jim Egr, Legal Advisor, Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association. 4 hours (0800-1200).

RX-310 Introduction to Fire EffectsThis course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and communicate the relationships between basic fire regimes and first order fire effects, the effects of fire treatments on first order fire effects, and to manipulate fire treatments to achieve desired first order fire effects. In an effort to maintain the currency and relevancy of the course materials for Introduction to Fire Effects, RX-310 the instructional design has been modified to allow instructors to develop materials based on current information, changing technologies, and the needs of the students. Pre-course work may be created and distributed at the discretion of the instructional cadre. 32 hours.

New Courses for 2014

S-273 Single Engine Air Tanker ManagerThis course meets the training needs of a Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) Manager (SEMG) as outlined in the Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide (PMS 310-1) and the position task book developed for the position. This is a blended learning course. Students are required to complete five online modules and complete an assessment prior to coming to class. Students will: perform the tasks required of a SEMG to mobilize and transition into an incident aviation environment; prepare for, manage, and oversee all phases of SEAT operation to support local unit and incident activities; evaluate the capabilities and organizational needs to implement a safe and efficient SEAT operation to meet the requirements of the local unit and/or an Incident Action Plan. 24 hours. S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior CalculationsThis course is designed to introduce fire behavior calculations by manual methods, using nomograms and the Fire Behavior Handbook Appendix B. Students gain an understanding of the determinants of fire behavior though studying inputs (weather, slope, fuels, and fuel moisture). Students also learn how to interpret fire behavior outputs, documentation processes, and fire behavior briefing components. 32 hours Pre-course work* required and available online. L-280 Followership to LeadershipThis course is a self-assessment opportunity for individuals preparing to step into a leadership role. The course combines a day of classroom instruction followed by a day in the field working through problem-solving events in teams. Topics include leadership values and principles, challenges for new leaders, situational leadership, team cohesion, ethical decision making and after-action review techniques. Prerequisites: L-180. 16 hours.Pre-course work* required and available online. See top of page for Internet address.

S-130/S-190/L-180 Basic FirefightingThis course provides instruction in the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. It is designed to meet the fire behavior training needs of a Type 2 firefighter (FFT2) on an incident as outlined in the PMS 310-1, Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide. A version of L-180, Human Factors on the Fireline, is included in this course. Prerequisites: none. 36 hours.

S-200 Initial Attack Incident CommanderThis course is designed to meet the training needs of the incident commander type 4 (ICT4). It is presented in a discussion/exercise format. The six instructional units include Foundation Skills; Intelligence Gathering and Documentation; Size Up the Incident; Develop a Plan of Action; Post-fire Activities; Evaluating Incident Objectives and Manage the Incident. Evaluation of the student is by unit tests and performance based evaluations. Prerequisites: any single resource boss. 16 hours.

S-212 Wildland Fire Chain SawsThis course provides introduction to the function, maintenance and use of internal combustion engine powered chain saws, and their fire application. Field exercises support entry level training for those with little or no previous experience in operating a chain saw, providing hands-on cutting experience. Maintenance, tuning, troubleshooting, and safety features are included, as are brushing, limbing, bucking, falling and field maintenance tasks. Prerequisites: firefighter type 2 (FFT2). 32 hours. S-231 Engine BossThis is a skill course designed to produce student proficiency in the performance of the duties associated with engine boss, single resource (ENGB). Topics include: engine and crew capabilities and limitations, information sources, fire size-up considerations, tactics, and wildland/urban interface. Prerequisites include FFT1 (quals) and S-230. 16 hours

NWFA Incident Management WorkshopThe NWFA Incident Management Workshop offers agency administrators and emergency/incident management personnel an opportunity to attend training that would enable them to work through the challenges of incident management before an incident occurs. Although it is intended primarily for local incident managers, attendance is open to anyone and there is no fee to attend. Prerequisites: none. Approximately 4 hours.

ICS-300 and ICS-400 are sponsored by the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and are offered withno registration fee to attend. Students are responsible for their lodging and meal costs.

ICS-300 Intermediate ICS: ICS for Supervisors and Expanding IncidentsThis course provides description and detail of the Incident Command System (ICS) organization and operations in supervisory roles on expanding or Type 3 incidents. Topics include ICS fundamentals review, incident/event assessment and agency guidance in establishing incident objectives, Unified Command, incident resource management, planning process, demobilization, transfer of command, and close out. Target students are Type 3 Incident Management Team candidates, incident middle management (division/group supervisors, strike team leaders), elected officials, line officers, lead dispatchers, director heads (public works director, fire chief, sheriff), emergency managers, agency representatives. Prerequisite: I-200. 24 hours.

ICS-400 Advanced ICS: ICS for Command and General Staff and Complex IncidentsThis course directs the student towards an operational understanding of large single-agency and complex multi-agency/multi-jurisdictional incident responses. Topics include fundamentals review for command and general staff, major and/or complex incident/event management, area command, and multi-agency coordination. Target students are senior personnel expected to perform in a management capacity in an area command/complex incident environment. Prerequisite: I-300. 16 hours.

C o u r s e D e s c r i p t i o n sS-234 Ignition OperationsThis course introduces the roles and responsibilities of a firing boss (FIRB), common firing devices, and general firing operations and techniques. Although comprehensive in nature, the coursework is not a substitute for the dynamic fire environment. The course provides students with important information concerning general tasks required to be successful. Weather permitting, a small prescribed burn or field demonstration on firing devices operation will be included. Prerequisites: S-290. 24 hours. Pre-course work* required and available online. S-330 Task Force/Strike Team LeaderThis course is designed to meet the training requirements for task force leader and strike team leader. Learning gained through examples and exercises may apply in fire suppression and other risk areas. Students will apply the Risk Management Process on various incidents, identify and describe the responsibilities of a Task Force/Strike Team Leader (TFLD/STL) and demonstrate the ability to apply appropriate tactics in incident situations with resources organized into strike teams or task forces. Prerequisites: single resource boss. 24 hours. Pre-course work* required and available online. See top of page for Internet address.

S-131 Advanced Firefighter TrainingThis course is designed to meet the training needs of the Firefighter Type 1 (advanced firefighter/squad boss). The course is designed to be interactive in nature. It contains several tactical decision games to facilitate learning the objectives and class discussion. Topics include fireline reference materials, communications, and tactical decision making. Prerequisite: S130/S190. 8 hours.

S-133 Look Up, Look Down, Look AroundThis course is designed to train Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5) and Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) to identify environmental factors and indicators of hazardous fire conditions, and how to use these indicators when implementing the Risk Management Process. The course is a CD-based classroom course, based on facilitated exercises. Prerequisite: none. 4 hours.

RT-130 Annual Fireline Safety RefresherStudents may attend annual training (in the evening) for the 2013 fire season. Current issues are discussed with emphasis on safety and LCES. Participants will also be required to successfully deploy a fire shelter (helmet and gloves required). Registration is not required, but is appreciated. Federal firefighters are welcome to attend, but may want to ensure this class will be accepted by their respective agencies. 4 hours.

S-270 Basic Air OperationsThis course covers aircraft types and capabilities, aviation management, safety for flying in and working with agency aircraft, tactical and logistical uses of aircraft and requirements for helicopter take-off and landing areas. Prerequisites: none. 16 hours. Pre-course work* required and available online. See top of page for Internet address.

Weather Spotter CourseThis course is offered courtesy of the National Weather Service, Cheyenne Wyoming. Basics of thunderstorm development, fundamentals of storm structure, identifying potential severe weather features, information to report, how to report information and basic severe weather safety will be discussed. Approx 90 minutes (starts at 1800). Open to everyone.

S-300 Extended Attack Incident CommanderThis course focuses on the lessons of leadership and command as they relate to the ICT3 position. It is presented in participative lecture format with multiple tactical decision games for students to practice new knowledge. Instructional units cover foundation skills, situational awareness, command and control in a rapidly changing environment, managing the incident, transitional activities, post-fire activities and a final simulation. Prerequisites: ICT4 and TFLD OR ICT4 and any strike team leader and 2 single resource boss positions – one must be CRWB or ENGB. 16 hours. Pre-course work* required, available online. The Lodge

Fort Robinson Information

LodgingOvernight accommodations are available at Fort Robinson.

Rooms in Comanche Hall will be available at $25 per night/per person on a first-come/first-served basis. Most accommodations are two room suites with two to four bunk beds and a shared bath. Please indicate on your registration the nights you will need lodging and include lodging fees with your registration.

Please note: Comanche Hall lodging is coordinated by NWFA. While we will make every effort to provide “private” rooms, students may be asked to share rooms if lodging fills. Please note anyone you would like to share a room with on your nomination forms.

Other lodging may be available (cabins, rooms, tent camping). Please contact Fort Robinson State Park for information and to make reservations for alternate lodging (other than Comanche Hall) at nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com/ or (308) 665-2900. Nearby Crawford (3 miles east) and Chadron (27 miles east) also have lodging available.

MealsBreakfast and lunch will be available at the Lodge for $5 per person per meal. Please indicate on the registration page the days you plan to eat breakfast and lunch with us.

Supper is on your own. NWFA encourages students to visit Crawford, Harrison (23 miles west) and Chadron. Local civic groups may also offer opportunities for supper. Check the information board when you arrive.

Additional InformationAccording to the almanac, during the Academy, sunrise is around 6:00 a.m. and sunset is after 8:00 p.m., leaving quite a bit of time before and after class to get out and take in the Park. There are numerous places to go fishing (remember to grab a fishing license from the Lodge), lots of back roads to get lost on and 22,000 acres to explore.
