Director’s Note Being a mother and wife, while working a full time job doesn’t always allow me
to take part in every show at The Foundation of Arts. Those who have been in a
show, know the time commitment that is required when you are a part of one.
With that said, I knew after listening to the soundtrack and reading the
synopsis of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, that I had to be a part of this story.
This story has so many controversial layers, including infanticide, lust,
racism, materialism, and sin. The story also includes the belief in a loving and
forgiving God, kindness, acceptance, love, and strength. Although the story is
tragic and sad, it also has a meaning. The heartbreak is meant to inspire. It’s a
story of hardship, death, and people living in poverty because they are
unaccepted and different. Only after death has occurred, do we understand the
meaning behind the tragedy. We are then able to reflect and also learn from
Esmeralda through her selflessness. In her song “God Help the Outcasts” she
sings to Jesus, praying for the poor and downtrodden, the Parishioners pray for
materials and rewards. While others tormented and beat Quasimodo, she
defended and even befriended him. In the end, Esmeralda is the true hero.
So much of this story has taught me more than what is written on the pages. I
have met and made relationships with many uniquely exquisite individuals
who have poured their hearts and love for the arts into this production. Countless
hours have been spent singing, memorizing, developing characters, painting,
and crafting to bring the story to life. This cast and crew have been the most
humble and hardworking people that I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I
see others uplifting each other daily with encouraging words and selfless acts.
There is zero judgement and 100% inclusiveness. It’s a beautiful thing to see-
others including others. This cast has taken the story and fully embraced it.
With all of that said, I believe that God did not lead me to take part in this
production because of the written story. He led me here for the story that was
within. Our storytellers (cast) have inspired me to be a better human. Thank
you to the cast, crew, parents, staff, and families of those involved for sharing
your love for theater on The Forum stage. Thank you for loving the arts and for
enhancing my way of thinking by just being you. All of your giving hearts
and beautiful souls are the true heroes in my story.
Someday
Life will be kinder
Love will be blinder
Some new afternoon -Amanda Fahlberg
A Heart for the Arts
Dear FOA Friends and Family,
A friend reminded me the other day that when I speak to FOA audiences I am
speaking to the choir. That may be true, so I will assume that you understand
the significance of the arts - not only in our culture - but in our own
community. Perhaps the arts within our community affect us the most. Of
course, the arts provide inspiration and joy to residents, beautify public spaces,
and strengthen the social fabric of our communities. I speak to this point
often. But what you may not realize, is that nonprofit arts organizations are also businesses. In a recent study by Americans for the Arts, local nonprofits
in the arts were found to be significant players in the local economy.
The FOA is a perfect example of what this study proposes. The Foundation of
Arts employs more than 35 people locally, purchases goods and services from
local businesses, makes our community more vibrant, and attracts visitors
from all over the area - including 16 other states in the country. Event-related
spending by FOA audiences generates valuable revenue, spending an estimated
$14.50 per ticket-holder (besides the cost of the ticket) for local merchants such
as florists, restaurants, retail stores, hotels, and even baby-sitters.
Locally, the Foundation of Arts represents about 55,000 trips to downtown
Jonesboro annually. More than 16,500 tickets are sold to FOA programs and
events, and in FOA arts classes alone, the FOA serves at least 500
families. Where the arts are vibrant, there are rising property values, and where
the arts are supported, there is a community who understands that the arts are a
pillar of a quality culture.
The City of Jonesboro supports the arts in our community namely by caring
and supporting the Forum Theater, which is the FOA’s primary performance
venue. The originators of our City’s Advertising and Promotion Commission
understood the importance of the Foundation of Arts because the Commission
was formed to help support the programming of the FOA, and today’s
Commissioners have annually kept that commitment to date.
In turn, the FOA manages the venue, staffs rental events, and invests daily in
the mission to enhance the quality of life in our community through the arts.
I hope that as you consider the impact the arts has on you and your family,
you find ways to advocate for the arts, and the FOA’s mission, to community
decision makers.
Thank you, Mr. Mayor and Jonesboro City Council members for
demonstrating an understanding for the many ways that the FOA practices
the mission for the citizens of our community- personally, culturally, and economically.
With a Heart for the Arts,
Kristi Pulliam
