N.P.A. (Natural Products Association)Formerly known as NNFA (National Nutritional Foods Association)

Formation date and history: Founded in 1936, the Natural Products Association is the nation’s largest and oldest non-profit organization dedicated to the natural products industry

Mission Statement: To advocate for the rights of consumers to have access to products that will maintain and improve their health, and for the rights of retailers and suppliers to sell these products

Membership profile: Represents more than 10,000 retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors of natural products, including foods, dietary supplements, and health/beauty aids.

Governance: By a 22-member Board of Directors representing all segments of the industry

Major Achievements: Lobby legislators on state and federal level, provide GMP certification for raw material and dietary supplement facilities, ensure label integrity through TruLabel and Foundation Testing programs

Formation date and history: Founded in 1982, AHPA is the voice of the herbal products industry and focused mainly on representing the botanical trade.

Mission Statement: To promote the responsible commerce of herbal products, to maintain and improve market opportunities for companies that sell herbs, herbal products and other health-related products, and to ensure that consumers continue to enjoy informed access to a wide choice of goods.

Membership profile: Members are growers, processors, manufacturers and marketers of herbal products.

Governance: By a 25 member Board of Trustees representing all segments of the herbal industry

Key Personnel: President: Michael McGuffin; Chief Science Officer: Steven Dentali, Ph.D.; Chief Operations Officer: Devon Powell

Major Achievements: Publication of Herbs of Commerce (1992 and 2000); publication of Botanical Safety Handbook (1997); Initiated successful industry effort to create serious adverse event reporting law (2003-06)

O.T.A. (Organic Trade Association)Formation date and history: Established in 1985 in the United States and Canada. Formerly known as the Organic Foods Production Association of North America (OFPANA)

Mission Statement: To promote and protect organic trade to benefit the environment, farmers, the public, and the economy. OTA envisions organic products becoming a significant part of everyday life, enhancing people's lives and the environment. 

Membership profile: Members are growers, processors, manufacturers and marketers of herbal products.

Governance: By a 14 member Board of Directors representing all segments of the industry

American Botanical CouncilFormation date and history: Founded in 1988 by Mark Blumenthal with ethnobotanist & author James A. Duke, PhD (USDA ret), Professor of Pharmacognosy Norman R. Farnsworth PhD, Univ Illinois-Chicago. The late Professor Varro E. Tyler, former dean of the College of Pharmacy at Purdue for 20 years

Mission Statement: To increase the quantity and quality of information on the responsible uses of herbs, medicinal plants, teas, phytomedicines, essential oils, and other plant-based ingredients for health purposes.

Membership profile: Researchers (ethnobotanists, pharmacognosists, natural product chemists, et al. in academia, Govt., industry), health professionals (both conventional and alternative, ie, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians, naturopaths, herbalists, acupuncurists, et al.), botanical gardens and arboreta, hospitals, libraries, universities, members of industry, government agencies, consumers et al from 70 countries.
