The Circulatory System•Includes functions of the heart, arteries and veins

•A network that delivers blood with each heartbeat carrying oxygen and nutrients to all cells of the body

•Our body's lifeline

•Pulmonary circulation is a short loop from the heart to the lungs and back again

•Systemic circulation sends blood from the heart to all other parts of our body and back again

Pulmonary and Systemic Circulation

The Heart

• The most vital organ in the human body

• A muscular organ that provides continuous circulation of blood through the cardiac cycle

• About the size of a fist and weighs approximately 9 to 11 ounces in females and 11 to 12 ounces in males

• Average human heart beats 72 timesper minute and approximately 2.5 billion times during an average 66 year lifespan

The term cardiac (as in cardiology) means "related to the heart"

The Heart (cont.)

•Acts as a double pump; right side collects the de-oxygenated blood and left side collects oxygenated blood

•Pumps blood through blood vessels to bodytissues by repeated, rhythmic contractions

•Delivers oxygen and nutrients and removeswastes

•Circulation of blood keeps body tissues atproper temperature

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the Western World

Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries (Blood Vessels)

• Arteries carry blood away from the heart

• Blood seeps and flows back toward the heart to be re-pumped through the veins

• The large aorta artery branches into smaller arteries called arterioles

• Arterioles lead into the smallest blood vessels, called capillaries

•Capillaries are the starting point for the return of blood to the heart

Healthy Heart Exercise TipsDo not embark on an overly ambitious exercise program, especially if you haven't been exercising regularly. You are likely to be highly enthusiastic in the beginning, but gradually become lazy, and slacken because of lack of discipline and motivation. Start on a program you know you can continue on based on your energy levels, your work schedule, and your free time. Nothing gets you off track faster than skipping your planned exercise program when you lack the time for it. That is a slippery road.
