•Among all the biometric techniques, fingerprint-based identification is the oldest method which has been successfully used in numerous applications. •Fingerprinting was first created by Dr. Henry Fault, a British surgeon.•Everyone is known to have unique, immutable fingerprints. •A fingerprint is made of a series of ridges and valleys on the surface of the finger.

•Proposed in Europe in 1858, implemented in Germany in 1903.
•Unique – So far no two prints from different fingers have been found that are identical
