How To Hit Your KPI’s One By One (M1-AB) by Scott Wheeler

An understanding of the KPI’s, or Key Performance Indicators, which speak vol-umes to the astute business owner, begins with an understanding of the dynamic and fluid numbers of which they’re made. The difference of a few percentage points off your GPM, or especially a drop in your Effective Labor Rate, can mean the difference of camping in a tent or staying in a 5-Star Hotel. This class cuts to the chase as to how to develop and achieve your goals as related to your automo-tive repair center by hitting you KPI’s on time. This is a hardcore class that delves deeply into Key Performance Indicators and removes any ambiguity surrounding them, including exactly what they are, which ones to track, and most importantly, supporting the activities that drive these KPI’s up or down.

Advanced Circuit & Electrical Testing (T1-AB) by Kris Lewis As an industry, we used to diagnose by simply memorizing how systems worked, followed by tests of every circuit and component until a fault was found. The primary tool for this process was the flow chart. As vehicles have become more complex, its just not a relevant or practical resource any more. ATG has led the evolution with the use of ‘high level indicators’ of faults in place of flow charts. For example: in our engine performance and engine management products, this means using Fuel Trim and Volumetric Efficiency not to find the fault, but rather to find the category of the fault and to rule out any tests in categories that could not be the cause. This is even more critical for electrical concerns, because flow charts were never written for most of the faults that can occur. Co-sponsored by ATG

Ford Engine Performance (T3-AB) by Wally Mouradian More than any other manufacturer, Ford has reinvented itself in the last decade. While many of the traditional services are now obsolete, the new Ford emissions and engine management systems create some great diagnosis and repair opportunities. But what hasn’t gotten any better is the Ford flowchart. You need to know what these systems are trying to accomplish and how they monitor themselves. With this information you can ‘think’ your way through a diagnosis in a fraction of the flowchart time. This new Ford Engine Performance class covers all engine management systems, and focuses on the following troublesome topics: false & misleading trouble codes; misfire diagnostic tips & tricks; new direct injection testing information; rear Fuel Trim in action; new natural vacuum EVAP; Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) systems; and much more. Co-sponsored by ATG

Mechanical & Variable Timing & Valvetrain Diagnostics (T4-AB) by Gary Machiros Mechanical timing problems have been around as long as the internal combustion engine, but more complex timing and valve train systems have flooded the market in the last decade. Now they’re showing up in your shop, and the stakes are high. Position sensor codes are often mechanical or variable timing faults. Variable valve timing (VVT) codes are often mechanical timing faults or lubrication issues. Even Fuel Trim, MAF, MAP, and other codes and symptoms can be caused by a variety timing and lift faults. When it really is a VVT system fault, it’s hard to tell if the root cause is an oil, solenoid, actuator, or other mechanical fault. What’s needed is a repeatable strategy to avoid testing ‘everything’, and instead quickly eliminate possible causes. In this first class of our new ATG Import Series, we’ve fine-tuned this approach to include manufacturer-specific ATG Tips for quick solutions you’d spend hours discovering on your own. Co-sponsored by ATG

GDI Practical Diagnostic Testing - Live Car Class! by Todd Doty (T6-B) Discover not only how to test but why to test specific systems on domestic GDI engine management systems. This live car demo class will first address how a symptom relates to a subsystem, then how to quickly test that subsystem, and finally how to interpret the results of the data. Symptoms discussed will include hard start, no start, poor power, misfire, and other common issues that are seen in shops today. Each procedure will be discussed and then demonstrated live in the classroom. Understanding the links between the symptom, the system, and the test will create a new found efficiency to your service bay. Bring your questions and your curiosity. The variable displacement compressor and expansion valve has become common, along with the computer control of the compressor. Changes to the refriger-ant circuit have also been made: internal heat exchangers (IHX), enhanced evaporators and condens-ers. Let us not forget the electrically driven compressors found in the hybrid electric vehicles; these too require specific diagnostic and service procedures. Sponsored by AC Delco

Mobile Diagnostics 101: How, When, and Why? (T18-CD) by Scott Shotton / Eric Ziegler Mobile Diagnostics is an emerging facet of the automotive repair industry. Both shop owners and technicians can benefit from this unique service. Every day poses a new challenge and almost always some unusual failures. “Dealer Level” tooling is often required for many repair procedures that used to be straight forward. It is not always practical or cost effective to send a vehicle to a dealership. This course offers discussion about what “going mobile” entails and what it brings to the table. Case studies and module programming strategies will illustrate some of the challenges and benefits of mobile diagnostics. Current tooling and a logical plan of attack are a must. A variety of tooling options will be discussed as well as the cost implication of the equipment required.

The goal of this class is to arm the technician with more knowledge for solving parasitic drain problems with the tools they already own and give some ideas for inexpensive tools and equipment to add to their arsenal in the war on electrical problems. The question of “how much is too much” is always part of the diagnostic procedure. When does the rule thumb formula “¼ of RC” go out the window?

Whole Vehicle Diagnostics (T64-E) by Victor Hernandez In order to serve their customers well, today’s technicians need to be ready to deal with any problem that comes to the shop. The customer only knows that the vehicle doesn’t feel right, drive right, or there is a light on. It is up to the technician to identify which system is causing the fault and affect a repair. It could be a transmission shift concern, an ABS fault, or a simple misfire. Technicians need to be ready and have a diagnostic plan. We will explore each topic as we work through real world case studies from the field. Sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts
