Research TopicStudy Habits affecting the scholastic

performance of undergraduate students in North

South University (NSU)

This research was undertaken for the following objectives: to know the study habits of NSU undergraduate students and to find the relation between study habits and their academic performance

Page 3: Presented by AHMAD GALIB 0910501030 Research Paper Presentation ENG105

Overview• Studying is the action to reach the goal of

learning• Effective study habit depends on the student’s

time management, study & therefore learning skills

• Azikiwe (1998) describes the study habit as “the adopted way and manner a student plans his private readings, after classroom learning so as to attain mastery of the subject”.

• If a learner earns high grades it is concluded that they may also have learned a lot while low grades indicate lesser learning

Overview (cont.)• Poor academic performance of NSU students is

found currently especially in exams• It is clear from all indications that most students

have ineffective study habits which might lead to poor academic performance

• Findings of the NAEP study on the relationship between study habits and academic performance revealed a positive correlation between study habit and academic achievement

• A student who has developed regular and scheduled study periods and follows certain methods in studying proves to have better performance.

Hypothesis

Study habits depend on independent variables like time management; learning & study skills which have a significant impact on the academic performance of NSU undergraduate students

To prove the validity of hypothesis self developed Questionnaire was provided to 25 students to find out the effects of study habits on their performance in NSU.

Hypothesis was proved right

Page 17: Presented by AHMAD GALIB 0910501030 Research Paper Presentation ENG105

Findings

• The higher grades were possessed by female students

• Most of the students like to start midterms or final syllabus the night before or days before the exam

• Most of the students who acquired bad grades would like to study at late night or night which hampered their studies considerably

• The time spent for preparing exam materials is not enough for securing good grade

• Students prefer different way to study naturally

Page 18: Presented by AHMAD GALIB 0910501030 Research Paper Presentation ENG105

Findings (cont.)

• Place of study is an important aspect for learning as most of the students decided to go for bedroom

• Students watch TV’s/movies or go through websites, chat with friends for study breaks but these approaches instead of resting the brain increases pressure in the nervous system.

• They like to drink caffeinated drinks more often which sometimes causes the body temperature to rise and results in sleepless night if excess caffeine is undertaken

• Most of the them take those for releasing stress or tension while the smokers believe smoking would increase their concentration as well as confidence

Page 19: Presented by AHMAD GALIB 0910501030 Research Paper Presentation ENG105

Recommendation• Building effective study habits in terms of Time management- scheduling specific and

adequate time for studying particular subjects, choosing proper time & spacing their time using appropriate study breaks which will refresh their mental energy

Study skills - avoiding procrastination, reviewing notes, staying away from time killing activities & not smoking tobacco while studying

Learning skills- group study & discussion and observing all techniques stated above as learning means,

“to gain knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something”
