THE «LOW COST» CONCEPT
What does «low cost noise monitoring» system means?
When planning to setup a «low cost» monitoring network, the following
parameters must be considered:
1 - Monitoring station cost
2 - Maintenance cost as a function of sensors reliability over time
The final cost is the sum of the two parts. Lowering too much the first will make
higher the second.

2 - Maintenance cost as a function of sensors reliability over time
When taking in to account the cost of field calibration and replacement, a “cheap
electret” becomes expensive.
It turns out that the best choice is to invest at least 150 € - 250 € in the
microphone capsule.

Nowadays it appears to be an easy task to built a noise monitoring station by
connecting a consumer microphone to one of the many open-source
hardware platforms (mini computers) available today

But this happen just in an indoor environment. Those devices are not
intended to work outdoor !
When this instrumentation is installed outdoor it is exposed to:
- sun UV and heat
- saline corrosive agents
- gases
- dust particulate
- electrostatic charges
- electromagnetic interference

Two types of sensors are being developed in the Dynamap project:
- High Capacity: with more expensive internal components and capable of
performing complex tasks, like advanced signal processing and noise
source classification.
- Low Capacity: with less expensive internal components and less power
absorption, they can be powered by a small solar panel. They are an
engineered version of High Capacity sensors.
