Positive forecasts for EU aquaculture industry growth
REASONS FOR PROPOSAL
Strategic role of Italy
4° European largest aquaculture
13% of total EU production in 2012.
11.000 tonnes of shellfish
1.800 tonnes of fish
Aquacolture in EU, in Italy and in Apulia
Fish will count for about 15.7% of the
animal protein consumed globally nowadays
50% comes from aquaculture
in 2030
estimated to rise to 65%
Apulia status

REASONS FOR PROPOSAL
In order to comprehensively exploit the opportunities in the sector, various
problems inherent to the production should be taken into account:
Opportunities and challenges
improving the
health and welfare
of fish during their
life cycle
improving the safety
level of operators
activities during
production
promoting environmental,
social and economic
sustainability of
aquaculture
increasing the
quality and
safety of fish
products

EXPECTED RESULTS
www.clustersea.it
ISSUES
o Risks to the environment and the
natural fish populations.
o Even huge economic losses.
o Operational risk for divers.
o High cost of the semi - autonomous
vehicles.
o Negative impact on public opinion.
1. DEVICE FOR MONITORING OF PRODUCTION FACILITIES
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Design and implementation of an
independently operating device guide for
remote viewing of the status of the
containment nets fish.
Power supplied
from operators boat.
Real-time video streaming.
www.clustersea.it
ISSUES
o Exposure of production structures
to the various ocean and sea
conditions.
o Risk for the operators on the
production facilities in the event of
rapid variability of the operational
situation in which the concession
area is found during the re-entry
routes into port.
2. DEVICE FOR WEATHER MARINE MONITORING
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Provide in advance the operational situation
in which cages will be found and in which the
technicians will have to act, in order to
increase the safety of the structures and the
people working on them.
Provide predictions on environmental quality
assessment to see if there is any
biogeochemical alteration around the cages.
The conditions are observed with ad hoc
device in situ.
www.clustersea.it
ISSUES
o Need to know the quality of the
environment (oxygen, temperature,
pH, salinity , ... ) in which the
farmed fish grows.
3. DEVICE FOR EVALUATING THE HEALTH OF SEA
Design of low cost solutions for taking in
situ and for remoting the measures.
Solution based on Arduino and SBC
PROPOSED SOLUTION
www.clustersea.it
ISSUES
o Estimation of the distribution of the size of
fish.
o Fish in movement.
o Possible fish superimposition.
o High dimensions of cages.
4. DEVICE FOR COUNTING BIOMASS
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Design and implementation of a device based
on computer vision.
Low cost solution (2000€ as target) to check
fish growth curve and to estimate feed
quantities.
www.clustersea.it
ISSUES
o Chronic stress of farmed fish with a
consequent reduction of well being and
health due to the presence of large fish.
o Physical damage to the structure
caused by poachers involving the
escape of farmed fish.
5. DEVICE FOR PREVENTING PREDATORY
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Design and implementation of a local non-
intrusive solution based on acoustic
transducer.
www.clustersea.it
ISSUES
o The use of net cages works for fish
containment, if on the one hand allows the
natural circulation of water in which the
animals live. In the other hand means that,
just through the networks, the unassimilated
nutrients and feces are dispersed,
in the form of particulates in the
surrounding water,
o Collection and treatment of all solids,
settlable and in suspension.
6. DEVICE FOR COLLECTION, STORAGE AND
CHARACTERIZATION OF WASTEWATER
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Design and construction of a device for the
collection of the solids deriving from rearing
activity.
The collector (very similar to a big funnel or
reversed cone) will be positioned at the bottom
of the cage net.
The accumulated waste particles will be
periodically removed, by gravity, through a
flexible tube connected with a
dewatering/thickening system
www.clustersea.it
ISSUES
o Unify the output of the assumed devices, by
integrating the experience of the operators.
o Lack of interaction and collaboration
across the entire life cycle of the
information.
o Lack of knowledge structuring.
7. SYSTEM FOR COLLECTING AND SENDING DATA
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Design and implementation of a software
platform for access to information gathered by
the integrated network of sensors, from the
databases of marine conditions available to
the project and from the users themselves.
www.clustersea.it
7. SYSTEM FOR COLLECTING AND SENDING DATA
PROPOSED SOLUTION
An integrated solution, in which every employee can get in touch and collaborate with
other users of the platform (i.e. partners and internal staff), in order to improve sharing
of information and knowledge (tacit or explicit, formal or not structured, etc.), and to
promote the progressive development and integration of skills, competencies and
technologies.
