A case study in which put to the test the skills acquired during the first year and challenge mind-sets, design methodologies and imaginaries.

If in the European context the main challenge for cities is today to rethink and rebuild their own identities, with a view to sustainable urban regeneration, in the Global South the challenges are quite diverse: from the upgrade of informal settlements and open spaces, to the construction of new low-cost residential neighbourhoods, from the major urban transformations as operations of the international capital, to the care of the historical heritage. In each case, the need to set appropriate, inventive, context-specific, and contemporary urban imaginaries is a crucial task.For these reasons, and in view of the different skills students will be asked to develop during the semester, the thematic studio intends to focus on a very dynamic North African city, Marrakech.After a first approach to Marrakech main urban conditions, qualities and dynamics - through virtual explorations of the city, bibliographic research, visual and iconographic research and analysis, collection of case studies in similar contexts -students will be invited to choose an area of urban transformation for the design exercise.
