Victorian Architecture?Victorian Architecture?- There is not THE Victorian style
- Like many Victorian novels (Vanity Fair) also
Victorian architecture is set in the past- This century takes what it likes from many
sources; mixes, matches, develops and distortsthem
- Featured styles: Egyptian, Byzantine,Romanesque, Venetian Gothic, Muslim Indian,Italianate, Industrial, Second Empire, Queen Anne

Italianate and Greek RevivalItalianate and Greek Revival- Flourishing from the mid 1800s to 1885
- Inspired by Renaissance structures
- Is said to have been Queen Victorias favorite
style
- Principle of Palladian symmetry
- Americans adored Greek Revival because of itsassociations with democracy
- Used mostly for official (representative) buildings

Gothic RevivalGothic Revival- Neo-Gothic from the mid-18th century on
- gingerbread house-style in distinction to
classical styles (Medievalism vs. Palladianism)
- Probably more Gothic architecture was built in the
19th and 20th century than originally ever built
- Also a movement in literature: Gothic fiction(Horace Walpoles The Castle of Otranto)
- Nationalism: Early English (tallest buildings)

An Example NearbyAn Example Nearby- Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristols symbol
- In 1929, Brunels design won a competition (a
stone bridge was too expensive)- Brunel died in 1859, the bridge was
completed in 1864 only
- Long reputation as a suicide spot
(direct line to The Samaritans)
- The last Concorde flight ever flewover the bridge in 2003
