Who is a supervisor?Supervisor refers to a person who
is responsible for over seeing the performance of employee at work.
Supervisors work is directly concerned with the workers activities which are responsible for achieving the objectives of an organisation.
So the supervisor is regarded as the ‘keyman’ in management
Functions of a supervisor
He gives orders, Instructions and implements the rules.
He converts the goals,programmes and policies into products and services.
He arranges work assignments,determines procedures and prescribe methods.
He provides technical knowledge to the workers
He arranges materials and tools for the workers
He controlls the performance of workers
He recommends promotions,transfers and pay increase if his sub co ordinates
He communicates the problems and feedback of his sub co ordinates the the management if needed.

Supervisor issues orders and
instructions to his workers.

Supervisor must inform the management about the progress of the assignment

Types of supervisionsupervision
Autocratic or authoritarian supervision:Under this category the
supervisor has full power and full responsibilty for group action
Free-rein or independent supervisionHere the supervisor doesn’t interfere with his sub ordinates
performance.he mainly looks after procuring the raw materials
Democratic supervisionHere the supervisor takes a decision only after receiving ideas
and suggestion from his sub ordinates

According to Alan C Reiley and James D Mooney
“Co Ordination is the orderly arrangement of group effort, to provide unity of action in the pursuit of common purpose”.
Co Ordination is necessary in all functions of management.
1)Early start
• The Co Ordination should be started from the planning function of management.
2)Personal contract
• Co Ordination is achieved through co operation and mutual understanding.
3)Continuity:• Since Co Ordination is the key stone of the
organisational structure hence it longs as the organization continues to function.4) Reciprocal relationship:
• the action of employee influences the action of other employee and vice cersa hence there is a need fo integration of all efforts and actions
Principles of Co Ordination
Internal co ordination:It is the establishment of relationship with a
view to co ordinate the activities of all the managers,executives,divisions and other workers
•Types of Internal co ordination1.Vertical co ordination:
It refers to that co ordination in which a superior authority co ordinates his work with that of his sub ordinates and vice versa
2.Horizontal co ordination:It refers to establishment of a relationship
between the persons of the same status.Eg: co ordination between the departmental heads, supervisors, co workers etc
External Co ordination
It is the establishment of a relationship between the employees of the organization and outsiders of the organization.
This relationship is established for the benefit of the organization as a whole
