• Purpose:• Learn the basic rules of grammar
• Raise awareness of your grammatical weak points and the way language is used in the business world• Develop an attitude towards English
Chapter 3 – Key Concepts (Explanation)
• The base word and its influence:• Can have elements added to it to form a new word,
e.g. read > reader• Base word is added by means of :
• Prefixes and word elements > e.g. unhappy, non-profit • Suffixes and inflections > e.g. annually, landing

• Go through each along with common errors associated with them

• Compound Words:• It is a new word formed by joining two words, e.g.
cell + phone = cellphone / cell phone• Each joined word should be able to stand by its
own e.g. unacceptable v/s net profit• Most newer compound words are spelt as two
words, e.g. chat room, cross trainers, credit note

• Word Classes:• Types of Word Classes:
• Go through each class along with examples and common errors associated with them
Nouns(Things we can see or touch)
Adjectives(Modify nouns)
Pronouns(Stand in for nouns)
Verbs(Action words, describe a state)
Adverbs(Tells how and when action
was performed)
Prepositions(Express relationship between
two parts of sentence)
Conjunctions(Join clauses together)
Interjections(Sounds or words that
expresses a feeling)

• Sentences:• Simple Sentences > easy to read and understand
because they contain only one clause• Compounds Sentences > formed when two clauses
are joined together with co-ordinating conjunctions• Complex Sentences > made up of two or more
clauses, co-ordinated or subordinated, or joined through the use of punctuations
Chapter 3 – Summary
• Bad grammar makes one look bad and interferes with communication• Good communicators are sensitive to language• Become conscious of your shortcomings and work consciously to rectify those mistakes
