Presentation to GEO ADCBrazil March 2011
The Challenge
Information systems need to provide simple access to multi-scale, multi-discipline data sets and derived information for decision makers
Nature doesn’t recognize forests, fauna, water and fire
as separate domains
Challenges to fill the gap• Build on existing (autonomous) capacitiesexisting (autonomous) capacities
– Implement a “system of systemssystem of systems” – Build on existing and future information systems– Supplementing but not supplanting systems mandates and
governance arrangements
• Assure a Low Entry Barrier Low Entry Barrier for Users and Resource Providers– Mediate (standard and non-standard capacities)– Interconnect (capacities) and Adapt existing capacities
– Implement Semantic Interoperability Semantic Interoperability – Avoid tight coupling

The Services for Analysis of the Greenland Environment (SAGE) is a tool designed to help scientists access, integrate, and analyze data related to the history and status of Greenland's ice sheet in real time using timeseries, scatterplot, histogram, and box and whisker plots. Currently SAGE supports seven data sets.

For the EuroGEOSS Initial Operating Capability (IOC), the Metadata Catalogue was populated with spatial and non-spatial metadata from EFDAC. Metadata adjustments have been made to ensure ISO 19115/19119 (ISO 19139) metadata compliancy (INSPIRE*). The Metadata Catalogue functionalities were adjusted to include a sub-category “Forestry themes”. As a result, the IOC Catalogue provides search, discovery and preview facilities of spatial and non – spatial metadata.
*INSPIRE: Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community
Catalogue harvesting & testing - IOC
The harvesting of external catalogues (Spanish IDEE* Service catalogue, Dataset catalogue, EuroGeoss Droughts Catalogue) has been tested successfully. Adjustments on catalogue services allow CSW** harvesting from CNIG and the IDEE Catalogue of Geographic Information Web Services.
**CSW: Catalog Service for the Web
*IDEE: The Spatial Data Infrastructure of Spain (Infraestructura de Datos Espaciales de España, IDEE) is an initiative to integrate data, metadata and geographical information produced in Spain into Internet, which provides to locate, identify and access to such information by its potential
users.
Viewing Information
A web-based Map Viewer was developed which enables the visualisation, interrogation (spatial & attribute) and overlay of spatial datasets over the internet using WMS/WFS/WCS protocols. The Map Viewer integrates data from other thematic areas: (Forestry, Biodiversity, Droughts) and at different spatial scales (Global, Regional, Local).

BENEFITS
Web Services (OGC)• CSW – Catalog Service for the Web
– Service used to request metadata catalogs of the datasets and services
• WCS – Web Coverage Service– Service used to download geospatial information in a raster format
and then manipulate the data
• WFS – Web Feature Service– Service delivering raw geospatial data. WFS are mainly data
downloading services
• WMS – Web Map Service– Service used to view data in a map format (e.g. Google)
• WPS - Web Processing Service – Service for standardizing how inputs and outputs (requests and
responses) for processing services
