ENHANCED SERVICES:Reference & Liaison Services:

• Faculty

We must move from satisfying requests to offering proactive

assistance to researchers.

– For instance, we should contact faculty who are preparing to write a book and obtain the early stage chapter outlines. We should then perform literature searches in secondary databases that they would not utilize, in this way providing unique or surprising citations that they might incorporate in their finished products.

– Similar types of proactive assistance could be offered if we were aware of their search topics for grants and other new exploration areas.

– “Librarian-in-the-lobby“ presence, before seminars, department meetings.

– Office visits for point-of-need and spontaneous service.

ENHANCED SERVICES:Reference & Liaison Services:

• Students

Recognizing the desire for remote access and for group work, we should offer:

– Online point-of-need tutorials, and

– real-time assistance in online collaboration workspaces such as the options provided by the Vyew software:

• Smart Board (white board and capture)• VOIP/chat (dynamic interaction)• shared screens … to view difficult and complex processes.

ENHANCED SERVICES:Reference & Liaison Services:

• Administration

We should be assisting by providing data that can be utilized to

perform Return On Investment analyses.

– publication and impact data that will assist with hiring, retention, promotion, and – comparative productivity against peer and aspirational institutions.

• Customized Services

We must provide customized discipline pages and portals

– for serious researchers and others – Views for other populations (visitors, undergraduates, administrators).

We should emphasize RSS channels and autoalert feeds for researchers to remain current and to gain a competitive advantage over those that only occasionally search for new materials.

ENHANCED SERVICES:Instruction:

Beyond Discovery … to data manipulation and management.

• We must expand our training and service from simple discovery of material to include critical thinking, filtering and navigation tools and techniques, and to explore other types of search assistance such as visualizations of result clusters and concepts.

• Library training must go beyond searching, and should address post-search data

handling.

• We should emphasize personal and group knowledge management and sharing. We

should go beyond citation management tools (RefWorks, EndNote) and highlight full media support (Zotero, diigo, SharePoint).

• We should support not only personal knowledge management, but we should also provide assistance with organizational tools and platforms for individuals and groups (such as e-portfolios and IRs which address legal Data Management Plan requirements).

ENHANCED SERVICES:

Instruction:

Beyond Discovery … to collaboration.

• We should develop and promote collaboration technologies for group research and learning

– collaboration workstations, – performance rooms, – shared workspaces, – teleconferencing capabilities, etc.

• Explore in-house Interactive Tables

(with integrated Smart Board capabilities)

for group work and audience display.

ENHANCED SERVICES:Instruction:

Beyond Discovery … to active learning.

• Explore visualization and presentation support for complex media materials and GIS/data manipulation.

• Physical/Virtual domains: Explain the advantages and limitations with both in-

house browsing and online browsing in terms of discovery - and explore what this means about creating a Core Collection.

– QR codes used to help physical browsers find associated online materials.– QR codes used to point to previous exhibitions and Finding Aids.

• Encourage course-integrated and active learning classroom techniques:

– Story-based scenarios are easier to remember, – Focus on Technology and Quantitative elements, and – Stress Information Fluency concerns - learning objects which test beyond simple

skills and demonstrate a mastery of concepts.

ENHANCED SERVICES:Collection Development:

• Understand and find a balance between ownership vs leasing approaches. – What does this mean about simultaneous seat limitations, and archival access to

historical snapshots of materials that have been modified over time - such as handbooks and encyclopedias?

• Implement patron driven acquisitions (PDA) when appropriate as a realistic alternative to just-in-case purchasing with very low use rates.

– Study showed 3:1 ratio for firm order vs approval plan book use.

• Implement seamless journal article document delivery - explore credit accounts that provide protected annual expense limits across publishers.

– There is finally a viable alternative to little-used subscriptions.

• Perform Return On Investment assessment analyses: – approval plan profile effectiveness, and slip review efforts – Book series and Standing Order use – reduce Abstracting & Indexing databases - if free harvesting proves effective

(Summon) or overlap shows low ROI

ENHANCED SERVICES:Collection Development:

• Explore consortial efforts for either savings and/or expansions of domains:

– Ebook sharing and purchasing profiles • for at least core materials, but possible esoteric material routing

– Collection reductions: weed little-used materials if there are

trusted paper copies (books and journals) – leverage for lower prices or higher cancelation allowances for

journal and A&I package renewals – long-term ILL subscriptions for selected journals?

ENHANCED SERVICES:Digital and Data: local materials

• Digitize special collections to promote the unique value of local collections. Beware, as this often creates additional walk-in users.

• Implement an Institutional Repository for locally created digital, and also scanned, material. Populate the IR with not just redundant published articles, but also with locally created materials such as teaching tools, e-portfolios, and local archives. Consider making the primary emphasis an ethnographic lens on your organizations efforts and specialities.

• In some cases, there are Centers of Excellence for certain collections and materials, so perhaps the IR should only capture the metadata and have pointers to national and international repositories.

• Consider stewardship responsibilities - investigate dark archives and trusted repositories. Consider issues of redundancy, efficiency, sustainability, and functionality from different approaches such as LOCKSS and Portico.

ENHANCED SERVICES:Digital and Data: campus collaborations

• Integrate into campus collaborations: Work with your campus Information Technology unit to add ontologies to simple Institutional Repository metadata elements.

– Structured hierarchies is our added-value contribution.

• Work with Research & Sponsored Programs to provide grants discovery and ultimate DMP data support.

• Promote “Scholarly Communication” conversations about disruptive issues such as Open Access, copyright, Creative Commons, and intellectual property rights.

• Provide awards for the creative use of digital versions of primary materials and re-purposed information elements.
