Use Gestures:

• Gestures need to be an

extension of your message

and the emotions they

convey. Planned gestures

look artificial. Instead keep

your hands to your sides.

Kill those fog-horns &

fillers with pauses:

• Even seasoned presenters fall prey

to these presentation killers - ‘um,’

‘ah,’ or ‘you know’, etc. Replace

those with a pause. The pause may

seem a bit awkward, but the

audience will barely notice it



Appeal to Emotions

Presentations should be

informative and entertaining.

Unlike an e-mail or article,

audience in a presentation expect

some appeal to their emotions.

Great speakers use stories to

create an emotional connection.



Pictures tell stories

• Wherever possible replace your bullet points with pictures.

• Very often a single picture can convey a lot more than a series of slides with endless bullet points.

• Remember - "a picture is worth a thousand words".

• Tell them what you are

going to tell them – brief

outline of what the

presentation is about



• Tell them – make an

impactful presentation

• Tell them what you

just told them –

Summarize the key points

covered



Arrive Early:

• Ensure you arrive at the venue before

your audience. Get a good feel of the

room where you are going to present.

• Do not fumble with technical gadgets

when people are waiting for you to

speak.

• Being well prepared can do a lot to

remove your speaking anxiety



Don’t get stuck to a podium

• Feel free to move around on stage to

engage the audience. If there is not much

space for movement at least vary your

position on stage.

• This will make you appear to be more

approachable.

• Use a remote device so that you can

change slides easily on the screen without

having to be stuck behind a laptop.



Slow your rate of speech

• Inexperienced presenters tend to

rush through their presentations.

• To ensure better understanding

consciously reduce your rate of

speech by adding meaningful

pauses to emphasis on points.



Maintain Eye Contact

• Maintain eye contact with each

person in the audience, if it is a

smaller audience

• For larger audiences, ensure you

exercise the lighthouse style of

eye contact - move your gaze

from one end of the room to other

and back to the starting point.
