What is Mobile OS
A mobile operating system, also known as a mobile OS, a mobile platform, or a handheld operating system, is the operating system that controls a mobile device or information appliance—similar in principle to an operating system such as Windows, Mac OS, or Linux that controls a desktop computer or laptop. However, they are currently somewhat simpler, and deal more with the wireless versions of broadband and local connectivity, mobile multimedia formats, and different input methods.

The Google Android Android is the first free, open source
and fully customizable mobile platform Bought by Google in an effort to extend
its reach from the computer-based internet to the mobile internet
A fully integrated bundle of software that will significantly lower the current costs and time for developing mobile devices and services

Android applications
Applications access core mobile device functionality through standard APIs
Through intents, applications can announce their capabilities for other applications to use
Applicationswithout borders
Applicationsembed the web
Applicationsrun in parallel
Applications can easily embed HTML, Javascript, and style sheets
While running in the background, an application can produce notifications to get users’ attention
Android applicationsAn overview of apps is available on the Android Market site, but apps can only be downloaded via the device
Security in Android follows standard Linux guidelines
Each application runs in its own process

Android / G1 limitations Only sync with Gmail; no Exchange or desktop Outlook
syncing No speed dialing No video recording functionality No notes, tasks, or to-do list applications pre-installed Basic navigation – back and forward – and bookmarks are
hidden Press “Menu”, then “More” for these options
No Bluetooth stereo, contacts exchange, modem pairing or wireless keyboards
Not truly open-source? Google criticized for trying to control the system
Apple Iphone OS
The IOS
iOS is Apple's mobile operating system. Developed originally for the iPhone.
The user interface of iOS is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. Interface control elements consist of sliders, switches, and buttons. The response to user input is immediate and provides a fluid interface. Interaction with the OS includes gestures such as swiping, tapping, pinching, and reverse pinching. Internal accelerometers are used by some applications to respond to shaking the device
The IRevolution The Ipad,Iphone and Ipod touch rule the
telecommunication market in the USA with contracts from AT&T and Verizon.
Apple products are a pricy affair. Iphone comes with inbuilt business
utilities. Corporates prefer the Iphone.
Ipad and its competitors
The Pros
Multitasking The Brand name of Apple Excellent User interface Rich Display Unmatchable Display Resolution Ofcourse the sleek looks and gr8 looks
Drawbacks
iOS does not support Adobe Flash or Java.[29] Websites that use these technologies cannot be viewed in full using iOS devices. In an open letter explaining why Flash is not supported, Steve Jobs called the Adobe product insecure, buggy, battery-intensive, and incompatible with a touch interface.[30]
iOS 4's web browser does support a number of HTML5 technologies which Apple recommends as alternatives for typical uses of Flash, including native HTML5 video (with limited codec support), and the canvas element for drawing 2D graphics.
Android vs IOS
Android / G1 vs iPhoneiPhone Android / G1 Advantage

Built-in media player Weak video playback
No multi-tasking, except for music Applications run in background
Ship for new battery; memory fixed Change battery / memory at any time
Multi-touch (patented) No multi-touch, only “long touch”
Thinner, lighter; fits in case; elegant Bulky; case won’t fit
Standard 3.5 mm headphone jack 5-pin mini-USB plug for headphones
All controls on touchscreen Touchscreen and trackball controls
8 GB & 16 GB versions Only 192 MB; can buy micro SD
No MMS available MMS is standard
Conclusion Even though Android has its own pros
compared to Apple, Apple is a proprietary OS and it wont run on third party hardware which makes the IOS a touch better when compared to the support facility of the smart phone segment.
Android has not achieved enough popularity and would provide a tough competition to Apple if the OS is marketed as phones by Google itself.
