History of…O Bands of this nature came to light around 1980’s

America, with forerunners in the genre being bands like Naked Raygun and The Effigies. The genre wasn’t considered very popular, but really captured attention of both major record labels and the public following the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind album. 90’s success continued with ever-popular bands such as slipknot and limp bizkit. Post-hardcore bands of this generation have gained great popularity, in 2013 Sleeping With Sirens third album Feel climbed to 2nd on the U.S billboard charts, the highest any post-hardcore album has ever reached on the charts.

DevelopmentO As an offspring of heavy metal and deathcore,

The genre incorporate ‘screaming’ and ‘death growls’ heavily into their songs, but not entirely, which separates post-hardcore from its parent.

O Over the past 10 years, Post-hardcore has merged into more of a blend of ‘emo’ genre with progressive rock and other genres, thus creating post-hardcore music with fast, techincal guitars and drums, featuring sometimes melodic singing as well as screaming, or predominantly screaming.

Conventions Of The Genre

O The music consists of very fast tempos, heavy bass levels and breakdowns in the music, followed by heavy drops, that often initiate moshing.

O It is just as frequent than not to have two main singers in the band, with one providing the melodic voice, and the other engaging in screaming, but it is also common for a sole lead singer to perform both.

O Band names are usually malicious or include harsh sounding words.

O Band members are often heavily tattooed and often engage in alcohol and sometimes less legal substances.

Song ChoiceO From since before the beginning of this

year, I’ve been fixated on doing my music video to the song Sleepwalking – Bring Me The Horizon.

O I chose this song because it would allow me to create my own narrative, and the darker nature of the song and album, greatly fits the theme and would allow me to create an ambience of my choosing.

ConventionsO The typical conventions of this music and the genre, include themes

of depression, anxiety and isolation, and acceptance of our vices.O My entire/or most of will be in black and white, which will represent

the dark places of our lives and how we get stuck there.O These are themes I will try and implicitly exploit throughout the

narrative I create for my music video.O In terms of development in this genre, it is becoming increasing

popular to add a technological input, as well as the original instruments they use for music. Bring Me the Horizon actually had influence and input from artist Skrillex on they’re older album ‘There is a hell believe me I’ve seen it, there is a heaven let’s keep it a secret’, which showed their diversity as a band. Since then Jordan Fish has become a permanent member of their band, which adds electronics, vocals and keyboard, which are evident on the track I’ve chosen ‘Sleepwalking’ and it adds another depth to the music they produce.

AudienceO The audience for my music and music video with

be fans of post-hardcore and the harder genres that surround ‘hard-core’ music.

O The narrative I create will be an attempt for an emotional connection with the audience, with relatability for some audience members, and how their vices have affected their lives in personal ways.

O It is the attempt to connected on a deeper level and how the narrative fits with the ambience of the music, are the factors which I hope will make my music video good and successful.

ContextO The song ‘Sleepwalking’ is about how we

as people suppress our vices and anxieties, and how they can be channelled through dreams or nightmares. It explains that it’s our mentality that’s most important to our health, and fighting the demons in your head is essential so that you don’t become consumed by them. This includes talking to people and finding people you can lean on, and this song is about looking for that help to find a release.
