    It is a self- limiting infection ofthe eyelids, conjunctiva andcornea due to viral invasion.

    It often results in deep ulcersand may be one of the mostcommon cause of blindness inthe United States. It usually lastsfor 1-3 weeks.

    Once herpes simplex is present in the eye, it

    typically infects the eyelids, conjunctiva (thethin, filmy, mucous membrane that coversthe inside of the eyelids and the white partof the eye) and cornea (the clear, frontwindow of the eye).

    It may also infect the inside of the eye;however, this is much less common.

    It is acquired via person-to-person contactwith infected eye secretions.

    Acanthamoeba keratitis: Infection of the eye

    with a microscopic, free-living ameba(Acanthamoeba) that isreadily found in theenvironment- soil, air and water. Infectionmost often occurs through exposure to

    contaminated waterwhilewearing contactlensese.g. swimming or showering in infectedwaters.

    It is acquired by swimming in stagnantswimming pools; wearing of contact lensesovernight and while swimming.
