Feedback

What did you like?

Substance• Breath and depth of issues. Well thought 3D

structure• Articulation of different perspectives: academia, etc.

And tools• Geographical spread of participants• Good cases, high quality presentations

Organization• Constructive and friendly• Final tables• Organization as a whole, time keeping• Dynamic• All stakeholders looking at the same promotes cross

learning• Meeting people and Networking• Side events• Discussion and exchange

What would you have done differently?

Substance• More action and roadmap• Avoid personal agendas• Too wide themes• More interaction and preparation of multistakeholder

tables

Organization• Distribute materials in advance• More time for discussions and participation• Communicate better the complex structure• Give materials in CD• Bigger rooms• Parallel sessions promote silos- fewer sessions with

all• Use flipcharts to collect thoughts• Long days, more breaks• Chairs in coffee brakes an for ad-hoc meetings. • Less emails in preparation• Less waiting in ceremonies

Water and Sustainable Development in the media: Where do we stand? Relegated to the sidelines? Tools and sources for reporting on water and SD• How to communicate on sustainable development & talk to people in a language they

understand. ‘Sustainable development is something for developed countries’ attitude in Asia. Lack of exposure of high-interest angles on stories. When is the journalist's job to educate as well as report?

• Good WASH stories give voice to marginalized, expose malpractices in WASH Sector & empower local people with knowledge to demand for services. Bad WASH stories are dry and uninteresting and cannot compete with more commercial topics. But experts can resent being ‘simplified’ or turned into soundbites for the audience.

• Suggested solutions: training of journalists specialized in WASH, water integrity advocacy campaigns

• Initiatives to facilitate awareness raising of the SDG: network of journalists, utilize the WWDR for media outreach, UNW-DPAC Information briefs

• Use of humour, where appropriate. Learning from more commercial communicators. Unresolved question: Is it ok to ‘dumb down’ for the audience?

• The support from the volunteers of the EXPO 2008• Maite Aldaya, Beatriz Mayor who you all know behind the scenes on

many of the products and preparation for the conference.• Gareth George working with the Journalists and making videos, and

Xabi Angos producing the dailies, Clemente Alvarez on Local media,• Ciro Argirot on IT, • Jesus Antoñanzas making photos and videos, • Natalia Uribe with the web and civil society, • Our ex interns that have come back because they wanted to meet you

so much: Julia Purdy and Anna Ohlin. • Monica Garces, Belen, Ines and Adrian at Registration• Our senior reporters – a luxury- Carlos Mario Gomez and Barbara

Willaarts.• the Webcast and sound technicians and our translators.
