Introduction

Origins of Emission Modeling in Models-3n Emission modeling intended to be an integral part of the

Models-3 system

n Integral components of the framework use theI/O API NetCDF format for communication

n SMOKE uses I/O API, but was not available for firstModels-3 release

n MEPPS used as an interim measure for reasons of costand timing

n MEPPS and SMOKE developed separately until1998, when SMOKE was revised to becompatible with the current Models-3 frameworkversion

n SMOKE architecture was streamlined to use thesame core programs (e.g., temporal allocation,speciation) for all source types to the extentpossible

Plans for the Future

n Updates to SMOKE to be included in updates toModels-3 (such as BEIS-3 and Mobile 6)

n Completely new Models-3 Java-basedframework planned for November 2001 – willcontain SMOKE and CMAQ at a minimum
