Jeff Hutchings

Jeff Hutchings is a scientist whose work on the evolution of life-histories, population dynamics and conservation biology of fish has generated a reputation that is world-renowned. From an applied perspective, his work has bearing on complexities related to: sustainable fisheries, species recovery, interactions between farmed and wild fishes, human-induced evolution and biodiversity. Jeff, the first native-born Orillian to be elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, was recently elected Fellow of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He is also a popular professor at Dalhousie University where he currently holds the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Chair in Fish, Fisheries and Oceans. Jeff was born on September 11, 1958 in Orillia, attending Hillcrest Public School and the Orillia District Collegiate & Vocational Institute. Although he came close to enrolling in a Bachelor of Music programme, he decided instead to pursue a science degree in biology at University of Toronto. His interest in biology was kindled by summers spent at the family cottage near Gravenhurst, a love of the outdoors, and a realization that biology provided opportunities to be engaged in field work. Jeff followed up his first degree with an MSc and PhD from Memorial University, studying life history variability of the Brook Trout. After completing post-doctoral research at the University of Edinburgh, Jeff returned to Canada in late 1992 to undertake further research at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in St. John’s. There he worked on Atlantic Cod for the first time, analyzing several large time-series databases on reproduction-related characteristics.

This was at the time of the collapse of Newfoundland’s Northern cod fishery and Hutchings became interested in the different hypotheses on the cause of the collapse. His work at that time started a set of research initiatives on ecologically, socially, and economically important fish in which he is still interested today. Amongst a huge list of accomplishments, Dr. Hutchings has been honored with a Canada Research Chair in Marine Conservation and Biodiversity and the A.G. Huntsman Award for Excellence in the Marine Sciences. In the A.G. Huntsman Award’s 38-year history, Dr. Hutchings is only the seventh Canadian to earn this award. One of the reasons Dr. Hutchings received the award is because he not only identified steps required to achieve more sustainable ocean management, he has furthermore been able to influence positive change. The plain-speaking and vocal advocate for the wise use of science in marine conservation isn’t afraid to use a little bait to catch a large fish. He applies his influence to create more progressive and effective government policy and industry practices, drawing on excellent science to support his recommendations. Hutchings believes that an integral part of being a research scientist is giving back to society and communicating with society as effectively as possible. He does this through his teaching and by delivering public and keynote lectures, appearing before parliamentary committees, publishing research findings, and interacting with the media. Jeff currently resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but stays connected to Orillia where family still lives.

Rick Ley

Rick grew up playing in the Y Men's Hockey league in Orillia until he was drafted by the Niagara Falls Flyers at the age of 15. He won two Memorial Cups with the Flyers; one serving as team captain. Rick recalls his young playing years and said Wayne Piper stands out as an influence; having a great knowledge of the game which he, in turn, passed on to his players. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1966 and played four seasons with them. In 1972 he jumped to the new rival World Hockey Association (WHA) where he was named Captain of the New England Whalers. Over seven seasons, his team won one league championship (AVCO Cup). Rick was named an All-Star all seven years and won the league's best defenceman award once. In 1979 the WHA was absorbed into the NHL and Rick played two more years for the Whalers alongside Gordie Howe. In 1974 the WHA all-stars played a summit series with the Russian all-star team and Rick was stalwart on defence, being matched up against Russian star Valeri Kharlamov; a sign of his status as one of the top Canadian defencemen. Upon retirement, the Hartford Whalers retired Rick's #2 jersey. In 1990 Rick was a charter inductee into the WHA Hall of Fame. Rick retired from hockey after a career ending injury and turned to coaching. His first coaching job was with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the International Hockey League where he won a Turner Cup championship.

In 1988, Ley was hired by Pat Quinn, his former defence partner with the Leafs, to coach the Vancouver Canucks farm team in the International League. He then went to Hartford and coached the Whalers for two seasons. In 1991, Quinn hired him once again as his assistant coach for the Canucks. Together the two went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, only to lose in game 7 against the New York Rangers in 1994. Rick became head coach of the Canucks in 1994 and then moved to scouting before being lured back to the NHL in 1998 as assistant coach to Quinn for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He remained there until the 2005-6 season. Never one to seek the limelight, Rick now lives with his wife Ellen in Florida, enjoying a quiet life in a lakeside burg not unlike Orillia.
