A Brief History of MET in Georgia

Maritime education has a century history in Georgia:

The first maritime courses were founded in Poti in 1901;

Maritime Industrial Technical Secondary School was functioning in Batumi since 1929;

In 1944 Maritime Industrial Technical Secondary School was reorganized into Batumi Maritime College;

Batumi Higher Maritime College was founded in 1992;

In 1994 by Georgian Government decision the College was reorganized in Batumi State Maritime Academy;

On June 25, 2012 BSMA received the current status – LEPL -Teaching University-Batumi State Maritime Academy.

The International Quality Management Standard ISO 9001was implemented at BSMA in 2001;

In 2005 the Academy commenced the application of ECTS;

In 2005 and 2007 the Academy passed the State Accreditation;

In 2006 the Academy became the member of the International Association of the Maritime Universities (IAMU);

In 2010 the Academy obtained the Certificates of ISO 9001:2008 and IQNet;

In 2010 the Academy became the member of the Association of the Black Sea Maritime Institutions (BSAMI);

In 2011 the Academy passed State Authorization and Programmes Accreditation;

Maritime education in Georgia is regulated by three laws:

Law on Education and Certification of Seafarers (2012);

Law on Higher Education (2005);

Law on Vocational Education (2007).

BSMA Faculties and MET Programmes

At present two faculties function at Batumi State Maritime Academy: Maritime Faculty (MF); Business and Management Faculty;

Vocational Training Centre (VTC), and Seafarers Training and Certification Centre (STCC) also functions at BSMA;

Educational programmes at Maritime Faculty, VTC and STCC are compiled according to the IMO recommended Model courses in compliance with STCW (Manila Amendments) Convention requirements; Maritime Faculty offers three Bachelor and three Master educational programmes; Vocational Training Centre offers two “3rd level” Vocational programmes.

Shipping Management and logistics, 240 ECTS;

Logistics and Freight Forwarding, 120 ECTS;

International Business Management, 120 ECTS.

Vocational programmes offered by VTC:

Training of Ships Officers

After completion of the first three years of educational program, Maritime Academy ensures students with special Shipboard Training (Sea-going practice) on ocean merchant ships in case if they want to choose seaman’s career;

Maritime Faculty ensures shipboard training on the vessels of the various well-known shipping companies:

Seafarers Training and Certification Centre

Nowadays rehabilitation process of Short-term training/retraining courses for seafarers takes place at STCC, the aim of which is to:

purchase and install appropriate learning technical resources in accordance with IMO requirements;

train appropriate teaching staff for training courses implementation;

get ready course syllabuses in accordance with IMO Model Courses;

organize seafarers training/retraining process in accordance with STCW requirements.

Seafarers Training and Certification Centre is equipped with the following simulators (“TRANSAS Set the Standard”):

Integrated navigational simulator – Navi-Trainer Professional 4000, full navigational bridge.

GMDSS simulator TGS 4100.

Engine Room Simulator ERS 4000.
