Sã o Carlos is located in the state of Sã o Paulo and is 230 km (2h40min) from the capital city, Sã o Paulo. Sã o Carlos has an active industrial presence in Brazil, both nationally and internationally. Due to its increasing number of technological industries, the city has been proclaimed “The National Capital of Technology” by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in 2011.

Because of these two universities, the city has people from all around the country, what makes it a good place if you want to know the whole brazilian culture and get in touch with different people.

Furthermore, the high number of university students makes Sã o Carlos a place with low cost of living and lots of options of entertainment for young people.

Also,Also, it’s a very safe city, scoring one of the lowest crime ratings in Brazil.

The population is around 230,000 citizens, with about 30,000 being university students. We have two very large and prominent universities: Universidade de Sã o Paulo (USP), the best university in Brazil and Latin America, and Universidade Federal de Sã o Carlos (UFSCar), which has 15,000+ students.

The city has museums, ecological parks, hiking trails, and many other cultural and outdoor options. Some examples are the TAM Museum (which has a collection of 90 airplanes) and the São Carlos Zoo, with more than 800 different species.than 800 different species.

If you want to explore other places in Brazil, São Carlos is also a good city because of its great location and proximity to other famous touristic cities such as São Paulo, Brotas,Brotas, Águas de Lindoia, Campos do Jordão and the São Paulo coast with lots of beautiful beaches.

São Carlos has a great mild weather with an average temperature of 21.5°C (70°F).

Luckily, you can get many places on foot, but if you need to take a bus, the fare is R$2.65.

The most common option is to share a house with other students. It’s an entertaining and enjoyable way to live in São Carlos especially if you are far from your family. Also, it’s a cheap option. Sharing a house, you will pay from R$ 250 to R$ 450 per month.

The currency name is Real, represented by R$. The exchange rates are:

Q: Do I have to pay for my airline ticket?A: Yes, this cost is on your own. Q: Do I have to pay for my accommodation?A:A: Yes. However, in São Carlos there are many options of accommodation at accessible prices. (More details on page 7.)

Q: Is the city safe?A:A: The advantage of São Carlos is that it's a very safe city, compared to others in Brazil. If you are from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru or Uruguay: don’t worry! You will get a special type of visa that doesn’t have any requirement.

IfIf you are from other countries: you need to be enrolled to a university. If you are not enrolled to classrom a graduation or post-graduation course, you can not apply to any GIP opportunity in Brazil.
