TRANSCRIPT
The form of the city is intimately related with democracy.
This is the thesis of the European Prize for Urban Public
Space which, since 2000, has recognised and publicised
the results of transformations and improvements in Europe’s
public spaces.
Cities are far from being idyllic paradises. Some of the most
serious problems in today’s society are concentrated and
expressed in public space. Fortunately, however, there are
also many exemplary cases of improvement in European
public spaces, which are sensitive to the context and
respect the collective and social dimensions of urban life.
Sixteen years on from its beginnings, the European Prize
for Urban Public Space is a privileged observatory of the
democratic quality of our cities.
CONVENING INSTITUTIONS Over time, several
prestigious European institutions have joined the project.
Although the CCCB is the driving force behind the Prize and
the activities deriving from it, the project is presently co-
organised by the Architekturzentrum Wien of Vienna (AzW),
La Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine of Paris (Cité),
Museum of Architecture and Design of Ljubljana (MAO), the
Museum of Finnish Architecture of Helsinki (MFA), the
Deutsches Architekturmuseum of Frankfurt (DAM) and The

architect representing the CCCB.

The Board of Experts of the European Prize for Urban Public Space is an international and multidisciplinary network of people linked to the city
and public space. Its members recommend public space interventions that they deem particularly well accomplished to the Prize’s organizers.

2016 AWARDED PROJECTS. Special Recognition
THE CITY OF COPENHAGEN (Denmark)
The Jury has decided to create a special category in order to recognise the public policies introduced and supported by the
city of Copenhagen. It hopes in this way to draw attention to its determination and persistence in reconquering public space
from private vehicles so that it may be used by pedestrians and cyclists. All of these policies are the result of a commitment
to ensuring that a good quality of urban life is available for everyone. This resolve is now patent in the considerable number
of interventions supported by the Copenhagen metropolitan area that were among the 25 finalists in this most recent edition
of the Prize.

TRAVELLING EXHIBITION. Some mounting versions
The exhibition has been designed and produced in such a way that transporting it is uncomplicated and inexpensive. All the pieces
comprising it can be folded, unfolded and stored in trunks with wheels, which makes moving it much easier. It is very adaptable and fits into
all kinds of different architectural spaces. Below are some examples that show several ways of setting up the exhibition: panels hanging on
walls, panels supported on metallic bases, etc.
There is an optional possibility of creating an annex to the exhibition which would deal with local examples of interventions in public space.
A selection of works that have revitalised local urban spaces could be presented, together with experiences that the city administration or
urban activist groups have worked on. The annex would involve the local architectural community and could be accompanied by
presentations or round-table discussions about their work, as well as guided tours. Local media could easily be mobilised to raise a public
debate on the city’s transformation.
