What does ORCID do?
vORCID provides a unique and persistent identifier that can be used throughout one’s career, across professional activities, affiliations, and languages
vORCID iD is integrated in standard workflows and embedded in works metadata, independent of platform
vORCID is an independent non-profit organization supported by member fees
vWe provide an open registry of persistent unique identifiers for researchers, and APIs for the community to embed identifiers in research systems and workflows
vData marked public by researchers is published annually by ORCID under a CC0 waiver
vORCID code is available on our GitHub open source repository and we support community efforts to develop tools and services
How do we do it?
Interoperability
vORCID works collaboratively with the research community to ensure use and adoption of research information exchange standards
Broad international usage
• 34 countries >10,000 unique visitors
• 81 countries >1,000 unique visitors
• Registry supports multiple character sets
• Content in Spanish, French, English, and Chinese (adding Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, and Russian in 2014)

ORCID iD adoption in PT
vVery short implementation time, remarkably successful despite that
vStill some issues when listening to researchers: feeling of additional administrative burden, uneven STM/SSHcoverage
vNeed to dissociate ORCID from Scopus import user experience, eg by offering researchers good and useful integrations
ORCID Integration Chart
Integration Opportunities
v Institutional integrations: IRs + CRISs. Opportunities for extending to HR, Financial systems
v Communication: let researchers know what they can do now and what they'll be able to do in the future (publishers, funders)
v RCAAP: repositories/journals
v DeGóis: avoid need for researchers to provide duplicate entries into different systems!

University profile system
Add ORCID iD to university personnel system
Boston University is creating ORCID records for their faculty (opt-out) and students (opt-in). They envision ORCID iDs as part of the university personnel system, access management, DSpace repository, thesis submission, and for tracking trainees on grants.

Transfer data from Profiles to ORCID
•Alfred P. Sloan Foundation award to support implementation of ORCID identifiers by universities and professional associations
•ORCID providing in-person policy and technical support
•Use cases, workflows, and code samples will be showcased at ORCID Outreach meeting, Chicago, IL, May 21, 2013.
