Syston Model Railway Society would like to thank everyone who generously donated prizes
for our TOMBOLA, which can be found in the Backroom.
Each year we choose a charity to which we give a donation from the profits of the cater-
ing. Last year we donated to East Midlands Air Ambulance.
This year, our chosen charity is Arthritis Research UK.
What does Arthritis Research UK do?
Everything we do is driven by knowledge to positively impact on what matters to people
with arthritis.
Our long-term commitment is to:
prevent the onset of arthritis
develop a cure for arthritis
transform the lives of those with arthritis.
"I am in control, independent and recognised"
Over the next five years to 2020 we want to make a positive and tangible change in the
quality of life for people with arthritis so that they can say “I am in control, independent
and recognised”.
We want people with arthritis to:
do the things that make their lives fulfilling and meaningful
manage their condition and the impact it has on their day to day lives
feel that they have a voice and are being heard, understood and visible.

EXHIBITS
SOUTH TOWN – OO Gauge Stand 1
The layout is based around the station at Yarmouth in the 50's — 60's era. It is a terminus
station with engine shed and operates a sequence based closely on the Summer 1959
timetable. The layout requires a footprint of about 23ft bins x 6ft, of which there is a
viewable section measuring 15ft x 20ins. There are approx. 20 different passenger and
freights sets working the timetable, most of which are kit built, as well as a selection of
30+ locomotives associated with the East Anglian scene.
South Town featured in January 2016 edition of BRM
TINNER’S WHARF – N Gauge Stand 2
Tinner's Wharf represents a location on a West Country branch line where there are
sidings for a china clay works and general goods traffic as it would have been around
1970. It is not based on any particular location but takes aspects from a number of ex
GWR and SR lines in Cornwall and north Devon.
The main scenic feature is the clay works that occupies one end of the layout and hides
the main fiddle yard. The design is based on photos of several locations with the main
drying sheds constructed from a balsawood shell clad with embossed plastic sheets to
represent the stonework and roof tiles. In addition to the main sheds there are a number of
smaller structures and two tall chimney stacks. Other structures are from kits and ready to
plant buildings.
The whole of the layout has been heavily weathered to represent the pervading coating of
dust that is to be found around clay works. This has been achieved using a combination
of filler and paining in various sheds of grey and white.
Trains are mainly in the hands of small type 2 diesels of classes 22 and 25 with a diesel
shunter being used on shorter workings. Larger classes of diesel hydraulics may be seen
on occasion and passenger traffic is handled by single car DMUs. The majority of locos
are in rail blue but examples of the earlier green and maroon liveries can also be seen.
The single baseboard is conventionally made with a chipboard top with timber framing
and has a folding extension for the fiddle yards at either end to bring the overall length to
6ft.
Trackwork is Peco finescale with medium radius points. Conventional 12v DC control is
used with electric point motor operation.
Stock is mostly a mixture of Farish and Dapol ready to run with some kit built wagons.
4
BOGHAMPTON – OO Gauge Stand 3
Boghampton is a fictitious terminal station on the south coast of the UK somewhere
between Portsmouth and Ramsgate. Trains arrive and leave for London and other
stations along the coast. Set in the mid to late 60's and being close enough to London to
be a commuter and holiday destination, the station has one, no longer used, goods bay -
parcels now being handled in the main station when necessary.
Boghampton is an 00 gauge layout with DCC Control from a laptop via a Hornby
Railmaster program controlling a Hornby E-link unit.
RAILS ALONG THE SEA WALL – N Gauge Stand 4
Loosely based on the railway that runs along the sea wall between Teignmouth and
Dawlish in the late 1960s early 1970s. Motive power is Western and Warship Hydraulics
that used to ply along the sea wall plus a couple of vintage DMUs. The dimensions are
9ftx5ft.
The DC-controlled layout is operated in the middle well and controlled by a
Gaugemaster twin panel-mounted controller.
RISE PARK – N Gauge Stand 5
This N-gauge layout represents a section of the Great Central Railway north of
Nottingham. In reality there was no station at Rise Park, and Top Valley doesn't have a
market place. The intention is to create the feel of the North end of Nottingham without
being tied to a real location that would not have fitted the space.
We look into the bowl-shaped Rise Park Station site. The station buildings are mainly
modelled on Rothley. The stationmaster's house and Railway Workers' Cottages are also
from CGR locations. To the left an old farm is being demolished to make way for Rise
Park estate. The show house has just opened. Deer still roam the woodlands that separate
this from Top Valley, where the buildings are older and more industrial.
A succession of trains typical of the GCR Main Line at the turn of the nineteen-sixties
run through this landscape.
COTON-on-DOVE – EM/009 Gauge Stand 6
A fictitious railway/canal interchange in Staffordshire from the 1920's.
CARDBOARD SHED – O Gauge Stand 7
On display are many detailed O gauge locomotives, hand crafted from cardboard.
“Cardboard John” displays his techniques and skills for turning cardboard into working
detailed O gauge locomotives.

TAMARO – N Gauge Club Member’s Layout Stand 11
At the southern end of the Gotthard rail tunnel in Switzerland the line emerges into the
Italian-speaking Swiss Canton of Ticino. We're in the 1990's at a small town station near
to the Italian border. There are local stopping services, and international passenger and
freight trains to and from Italy. Across the road from the station a light railway operates a
shuttle service up and down the valley.
DERBY ROAD – N Gauge Club Member’s Layout Stand 12
Derby Road was the terminus of the LNWR branch from Coalville. The branch closed to
passengers in 1931 and freight in 1963. The layout portrays the area had the station still
been open today with a new station building, loco shed, diesel depot and track plans to
suit modern requirements.
SUTTON-in-ASHFIELD – OO Gauge Stand 14
This 00 gauge layout has been donated to The Elizabethan Railway Society by the
widow of the late Alan Jones of Stanton Hill.
Alan started to construct the layout around 2004 and made rapid progress, until he
unfortunately fell ill. Alan passed away in 2011 and his wish was to pass his layout onto
The Elizabethan as we were his local club.
Alan undertook a vast amount of research of the former Great Northern station including
visiting site to measure the former Station masters house. As a child Alan attended the
local boys school on Priestsic Road in town and the school is modelled in great detail on
the layout. Alan persevered and has produced a very accurate scale model which
stretches from Outram Street Bridge past the station and goods shed under Priestsic Road
bridge and past the Carr Fasteners factory. All the buildings and structures are scratch
built by Alan, and he has made an excellent job of everything he has built. We hope you
enjoy the layout and reminisce on how Sutton was and "what if" the line had stayed
open?
All of the layouts on show are fragile and are the fruits of many hours hard
work. Please be careful when viewing; unfortunately not all damage is done

SALVERTON – N Gauge Stand 8
This layout was started in winter 2012 and completed during 2014. It made an
appearance in Coventry in 2012 as "work in progress". Starting with a tray that Ken's
wife was going to throw out. Ken added a canal, before fixing a roadway around the
outside of the tray. This carries the Tomytec moving road system allowing N gauge
buses to operate a shuttle service. Above this extended base board is a small N gauge
circular line offering brake van tours.
The tray itself has a small Nn3 layout and a transport museum. Work started in February
2013 to lay the Nn3 track - the museum's buildings come from a Cornerstone modular kit
donated by a friend. Much of the construction of this layout uses second hand items to
keep costs down. The water tower is a second hand Lyddle End item and rolling stock
will come from Ken's other layouts. Only the Tomtyec moving bus system was acquired
new direct from Japan.
FIDDLERS CREEK – O Gauge Stand 9
Fiddlers Creek began life in the late 1980's as part of a large "0" gauge model built by
Rugby Model Railway Society members. It represented a Colonel Stephens type railway
set in the early 20th century; ie built on a very low budget. Engines and stock were
usually bought from larger railways and contractors who no longer had use for them.
The layout was originally 12 feet long but grew to 40 feet over a number of years.
It was exhibited locally, around the Midlands and several times at the Llandudno
Victorian Extravaganza and the Ffestiniog Railway Festival.
Due to loss of a club room it eventually had to be dismantled but we kept the “Fiddlers
Creek” Station end (now 13ft 6ins long). In 2013 Fiddlers Creek was overhauled, the
track layout modified, completely rewired and a new control panel built.
The stock is a mix of kit and scratch built. Track and point work are mostly hand built.
COALEY JUNCTION – OO Gauge Stand 10
Coaley Junction is privately owned, although it began life as a club layout in the Bristol
area. Under its new ownership it has undergone a thorough overall and has had a wide
range of improvements.
It depicts a real location on the Bristol - Gloucester mainline where the Dursley line
branched off. The setting is the early 60s featuring mainly Midland motive power.
The roster of trains includes express passenger workings of Midland and Western origin,
considerable freight, plus local traffic. Diesels are beginning to make their presence felt!
