Welcome to Taste Champagne Hong Kong.Over the past five years, Taste Champagne has grown to become the largest champagne showcase event series in the new world, this year spanning Australia, Hong Kong and, for the first time, London.After the resounding success of Taste Champagne Hong Kong 2017, it’s our great privilege to welcome you back to our biggest and best Hong Kong event yet. It’s our great pleasure to present a record of 113 cuvées from 30 négociants, growers and coopératives, showcasing the grand diversity of champagne for Hong Kong’s top sommeliers, wine buyers, media and champagne-loving public.Taste Champagne 2019 comes at a crucial juncture for champagne in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is a unique champagne market.No other country drinks champagne like Hong Kong. This country brings in more than four times more vintage champagne than any other as a proportion of its imports. Its average spend per bottle ranks among the top five in the world, and its love affair with prestige champagne holds a lofty position in the top four. Hong Kong holds a privileged rank as one of the most premium champagne markets on earth. It confidently upholds its position as the 16th largest market, up from just 21st back in 2008. Its small population ranks it seventh in the world for consumption per head of population, the highest outside of Europe and Australia. Hong Kong’s champagne trends are certainly worth popping a cork to celebrate!

Champagne in Hong Kong has entered a buoyant new era.After more than trebling champagne shipments in the decade from 2003 to 2013, Hong Kong’s imports stagnated until 2016. Since the inaugural Taste Champagne 2017, we have witnessed a fundamental shift, and Hong Kong is now bubbling along on an incredible champagne wave, recording its strongest growth since 2012. This trend accelerated in 2018. Of Champagne’s top markets, Hong Kong recorded the largest growth in its champagne shipments on the latest figures currently available (Jan-Oct 2018), mushrooming in both volume and value. While sales are buoyant, not all is sparkling. A closer look at the champagnes Hong Kong is choosing reveals considerable potential for this market to mature.Of Champagne’s top markets in 2017, Hong Kong:

• is dominated more by champagne négociants than any other apart from Australia• imports less coopérative champagnes by volume than any other• imports less grower champagnes by volume than most others• ranks a little below average in rosé imports

Champagne globally2017 marked a milestone turning point in the changing balance of champagne shipments, the first year since The Great Depression of the 1930s in which champagne exports exceeded French consumption, and 2018 has continued this trend emphatically, as domestic consumption continues to fall while exports outside of Europe rise.

The vital importance of exports beyond Europe to key growth markets like Hong Kong is more crucial than ever for champagne. Of a total of 301.9 million bottles shipped in 2018 (down 1.8% on 2017), the French market was down 4.2% to 147.0 million, the European Union down 0.9% to 76.1 million and exports outside of Europe up 2.1% to 78.9 million. Exports now represent 51.3% of shipments and exports outside of Europe comprise 50.9% of total exports.

December was a particularly strong month outside of Europe, with shipments up 14.2% on 2017, despite declines of 4.9% in France and 1.3% in the European Union.

The largest decline in champagne shipments in 2018 was in grower champagnes, down 4.4% on 2017, continuing an ongoing trend of decline. Over the past decade, grower sales have declined more than 30% globally. Houses were down 1.4% in 2018, while coopératives were up 0.8%.

Champagne négociants, growers and coopérativesOver the past decade, sales by volume of champagne négociants globally have grown 2.4%, growers have dropped by 30.1% and coopératives by 7.5% as Champagne moves toward a steadily increasing dominance by its houses.

Champagne’s top fifteen marketsIn 2017, shipments to China overtook those to Hong Kong for the first time, making Hong Kong the 16th largest champagne market on earth, with 1.83 million bottles landing. Back in 2008 it ranked just 21st.

Remarkable consumptionHong Kong confidently holds its place as the seventh largest champagne market per head of population, and ranks after Australia as the only countries outside Europe in the top nine.


Hong Kong: A market on the riseAfter four years of stagnation, shipments of champagne to Hong Kong increased by 8.1% by volume to 1.83 million bottles in 2017. Growth in value progressed faster still, rising by 12.1% to €41.1 million. This trend accelerated in 2018. Of Champagne’s top markets, Hong Kong recorded the largest growth in its champagne shipments on the latest figures currently available (January-October 2018), mushrooming 17.0% by volume and 5.3% by value. This returns Hong Kong to the growth performance of its heyday, when it enjoyed rapid increases in champagne shipments after import taxes were abolished in 2008 (though between 2012 and 2016 this growth softened to an average of just 1.7% per year). Hong Kong stands out as a market of great potential, thanks both to its role as ‘wine hub’ of Southeast Asia and its growing domestic consumption.

Buoyant valuesOf Champagne’s top markets, Hong Kong’s average spend per bottle ranks fifth, reflecting the strength of Hong Kong as a premium champagne market.


The grower and coopérative crisisOf Champagne’s largest markets, Hong Kong is dominated more by champagne négociants than any other apart from Australia, with just 4.5% of market share by volume for champagne growers and 0.9% for coopératives in 2017, compared with 18.7% and 8.9% respectively globally. While négociants grew by 9.1% by volume and growers by an encouraging 13.2%, coopératives suffered a dramatic decline of 46.2%. This places Hong Kong in last place among Champagne’s top markets for coopérative imports, and in the bottom five for grower imports. This means, of every 19 bottles of champagne sold in Hong Kong in 2017, 18 were from champagne négociants. Globally, it’s fewer than 14 in 19. However, there is promise in the trend for growers. In 2008, négociants occupied 97% of the Hong Kong champagne market, with just 1.3% and 1.6% left for growers and coopératives respectively.

Prestige popularityOf Champagne’s top markets, Hong Kong ranks fourth in prestige sales, narrowly overtaken by Italy after slipping by 16.3% in 2017 after a dynamic year in 2016. More than one in 14 bottles of champagne purchased in Hong Kong are prestige. On average across all markets, it’s just one in 22.


Rosé revolutionOf Champagne’s top markets, Hong Kong ranks a little lower than average in rosé sales. One in every 12 bottles of champagne popped in Hong Kong is pink, compared with a little more than one in ten globally. Champagne rosé is elegantly suited to Hong Kong’s diverse cuisine and warm climate, and deserves pride of place in every celebration.

Vintage obsessionThe runaway success of vintage champagne in Hong Kong is unparalleled in any other market on earth. Vintage represents a tiny category in champagne worldwide, making up fewer than one in every 60 bottles of champagne sold. In Hong Kong, it’s one in 12 bottles, more than four times more than Switzerland, the next highest! Hong Kong has embraced what is widely heralded as champagne’s most underrated category of all. Production is minuscule and typically a strong step up from entry non-vintage blends, yet largely underappreciated by other markets. Look out for the spectacular 2008 and the exciting 2012 vintages this year.
