Slide 2 Present simple and continuous Slide 3 Present simple Form: He/she/it works. I work. They work He doesnt work. They dont work. Does he work? Do they work? Use: we use the present simple tense to: -give information about permanent activities (Valentino makes luxury chocolates.) Slide 4 describe a state that doesnt change: (He looks like his father.) -talk about routine activities, repeated actions or habits: (I often travel abroad on business.) -some verbs are always used in the present simple (not with ing): What do you mean? I remember her name. Slide 5 Present continuous Form: I am going. He/she/it is going. They are going. I am not going. Am I going? Use: We use the present continuous to: -describe activities in progress at the moment of speaking (She is talking to him on the phone right now.) Slide 6 -describe temporary situations: (The delegation is staying at the Hilton until Friday.) - refer to future arrangements: (He is starting a new job next week.) - describe changing situation: (We are developing a new marketing strategy.) The simple expresses a complited action ( Ive painted the kitchen, and now Im doing the bathroom.) The continuous expresses an activity over a period of time ( Ive got paint in my hair because Ive been decorating) Slide 11 Some verbs have the idea of a long time, for example, wait, work, play, try, learn, rain. These verbs are often found in the continuous. Ive cut my finger.(one short action) Ive been cutting firewood.(perhaps over several hours) Slide 12 Some verbs dont have the idea of a long time, for example, find, start, buy, die, lose, break, stop. Those verbs are more usually found in the simple. Ive got lost my passport. Slide 13 Use your idea. Adapt it for a special purpose. To talk about what weve already decided to do or planned; it expresses the intention of the subj. a) To talk about intentions - Im going to see my dentist tomorrow. -Luniz says hes going to be a doctor. a)-Im going to spend the weekend with my friend. 2. When there is something in the present situation that shows what will happen in the near future. In this case the speaker is sure about what will happen. -The wind has changed and the clouds are black. I think it is going to rain. - Watch out! That parcel is going to fall. Slide 25 The future progressive/continuous (will be+ Ving) Function Example 1. For an action, which will be in progress at a time in the future. This time tomorrow Ill be flying to Istanbul. Next year well be living in Antalya. 2. For an action thats part of a plan or arrangement. She will be leaving school in July. 3. As a polite way of asking about someones plan. Will you be watching Sundays film this noon?
