Prescott Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution September 2018 1 Address P.O. Box 10653 Prescott AZ 86301 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Fellow Compatriots & Friends – As we leave behind the summer months, I hope that this message finds you well. Our Chapter is participating in many activities this fall and I urge you to become involved as you are able. An important SAR activity in Sep- tember is getting involved with our schools during “Constitution Week” to teach youth (and adults) about the United States Constitution – that su- perb charter of freedom. We need to promote among our youth and citi- zenry that we should not take for granted the privilege of living under the American Constitution. It’s so- bering that a university study in 2012 found that over 70 percent of Americans polled could not identify the Constitution as the supreme law of the land. The celebration of the United States Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolu- tion. In 1955, DAR petitioned Con- gress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the ob- servance of Constitution Week. The resolution was signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This September marks the 231st anni-versary of the drafting of the Consti-tution of the United States.A woman famously asked BenjaminFranklin as he exited ConstitutionHall following the adoption of theConstitution; “Well, what have wegot – a republic or a monarchy?”Franklin’s reply: “A republic, if youcan keep it.” He knew that an en-gaged citizenry is critical; and thatcitizenship is not a spectator sportbut requires patriots, advocates andstern defenders. As always, please let your officersknow if you have an interest and areable to participate in any Chapter orState SAR programs. Compatriots -I trust that you had a “Happy Consti-tution Day” - let’s work hard to keepit!Fraternally,Wayne Hood

Constitution Week has been a big educational experience for our Society. Thanks to Allen Nash for including us in his association with ChristopherRaso at Canyon Ridge School in Surprise AZ. His class dressed in colonialoutfits they made and then have the junior classes come in and ask themquestions. They really knew their parts. They portrayed George and MarthaWashington, Betsy Ross, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, CrispusAttucks and Paul Revere on a horse he constructed.

EO from page 1The Boy Scouts and the SAR havepartnered to allow the SAR memberto take and get certified with theYPT. Follow this link for the pro-gram.https://www.scouting.org/training/youth-protection/ Thanks for yoursupport. Steve [email protected]

Patriot Biography: John CateSubmitted by James D. Cates, Prescott Chapter, Arizona, National Number203841

John Cate was born in Barrington, NH in the Cate Garrison House built byhis father Captain William Cate, Patriot (1698-1783)as a defense from attacks on the town by the Frenchand Native Americans. His mother was Elizabeth Cot-ton (1705-1800) of Portsmouth, NH. The Cate familywas active in town affairs. John’s father William wasone of the founders of the town of Barrington, estab-lished on land granted by the crown to citizens ofPortsmouth who repaired HMS Barrington, a frigate

damaged by a storm in the Caribbean. John married Mary Garland, daugh-ter of John Garland, Patriot (1719-1805) and Molly Rand (1726-1769) on11 Oct 1762 in Barrington. John served as Selectman for the town in 1771and 1772 and again from 1774 to 1804. He signed the Association Test in1776. John followed in his father’s footsteps in the New Hampshire Militia. In 1775 he served as First Lieutenant in Captain Samuel Hayes’ companyon Pierce’s Island at Fort Washington, one of the harbor defenses for Ports-mouth Harbor erected after the British burning of Falmouth, MA in Octo-ber. In 1776 he served again in Colonel Joshua Wingate’s regiment in thedefense of Fort Ticonderoga. From September to December, 1777 he servedin Colonel Drake’s regiment to reinforce General Gates at Saratoga. GeneralBurgoyne disparaged militia forces for not having artillery. Colonel Drakecombed the harbor defenses for spare cannon and equipped his men withartillery. The unit was involved in the battle including General Burgoyne’sfinal defeat and surrender. From July to October, 1780 John served again inColonel Bartlett’s regiment for the defense of West Point during the time ofBenedict Arnold’s betrayal. John and Mary raised a family of seven sonsand six daughters. Mary died in 1786 and John died in 1815. Both are bur-ied on the old family farm in Barrington.
