Preschool–Kindergarten Objectives • Understanding the relationship between numbers and quantities • When counting objects, saying the number names, pairing each object with only one number name and each number name with only one object • Counting up to 20 items in a line, rectangular array or circle, or up to 10 items in a scattered configuration; counting out objects up to 20 Materials Needed • Turkey template • Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (a variety of colors, including 10 pages of light brown) [TA50] • Duck Quills - Class Pack [VR204] • Best-Buy School Glue - 4 oz. [RS4] • Marker • Thanksgiving Counting Book reproducible • Small Thanksgiving-themed stickers (55 stickers per student) Products with item numbers are available at LakeshoreLearning.com. Procedure 1. Reproduce 10 copies of the turkey template onto light brown construction paper. 2. Use a marker to number the turkeys from 1 to 10. 3. Mix up the turkeys. Then hold up the turkeys one at a time and have volunteers identify the numbers. 4. Divide the class into groups of three or four. Give each group a couple of the numbered turkeys and some feathers. 5. Point out that the turkeys are missing their feathers. Instruct students to look at the numeral on each turkey’s body and glue that number of feathers on the turkey. Allow the glue to dry completely. 6. Have students help you hang the 10 completed turkeys in order on a bulletin board titled “Ten Little Turkeys!” Independent Practice 1. Print out the Thanksgiving Counting Book reproducible and make photocopies on construction paper. You may want to have adult volunteers cut the pages along the dotted lines and staple them together so that the books are already assembled. If not, help students assemble their books. 2. Provide students with Thanksgiving-themed stickers. Encourage students to look at the numeral on each page and attach the corresponding number of stickers. (Variation: Instead of stickers, have students glue uncooked kernels of corn to the pages of their counting books!) 3. Invite students to take their counting books home to practice number recognition and counting skills! ©Lakeshore www.lakeshorelearning.com
