Procedure
1. Askstudentstorecalltheplacesinthestory.Makealistoftheseonchartpaperandinvitestudentstodiscusswhythecommunityneedseachplace(e.g.,storestobuyfoodandclothes,hospitalstohealsickpeople,firestationstoputoutfires,etc.).
2.Promptstudentstolistneighborhoodplacesnotincludedinthestory.
Guided Practice
1. Giveeachstudentadifferentcommunitybuildingstemplate,scissors,apaperbag,newspaperorscrappaper,somecrayonsandagluestick.
2.Askstudentstocolorandcutouttheircommunitybuildingandglueittotheoutsideoftheirpaperbag.
3.Instructstudentstostuffthebagswithbunchesofpaperuntilthebagsstandupwithoutsupport.Helpstudentsfoldthetopsoftheirbagsbeforeyoustaplethemclosed.Tip:Whilestudentsareworkingontheirbags,youoraparentvolunteercancutoutthefiguresfromthecommunityhelperstemplateandmounteachoneontoposterboard.
4.Whenthebagsarefinished,directstudents’attentiontoyouasyouholdupacommunityhelperfigure.Havestudentsidentifywhatthiscommunityworkerdoes(e.g.,firefighter,doctor,librarian,etc.).Repeatwiththeotherfigures.
5.Askstudentstoraisetheirhandsastheyidentifyfigureswhoworkintheircommunitybuilding.
6.Onceallhelpershavebeenmatchedtothecorrectbuildings,placethepaperbagsandfiguresinaclass-roomdramaticplayorblockplaycenter.Addsomebooksaboutcommunityhelpersforstudentstoenjoy!
