How to use these lesson plans

This lesson plan packet contains the following:

Use the Book List to stock your classroom reading center and choose which books

you’ll read aloud during the apple theme.

The 1-page weekly lesson plan has ideas for center activities, read alouds,

whole group lessons, small group math lessons, small group science lessons, and small group literacy lessons.

The alternate lesson plan sheets are perfect for creating your own plans if

you teach a 4-day, 3-day, or 2-day preschool program. Simply grab the items you’d like and arrange them to the calendar that’s best suited for you. These sheets are editable – so you can type in the dates, days of the week, and activities. You can also just printthe templates and handwrite your plans.

The daily lesson plans delve into the specifics of each lesson idea. Materials are

included along the top of each daily plan. The days of the week and dates on these sheets are editable.

The centers explanation has more information about each center activity. There

are 2 to 3 ideas for each center. Some teachers keep the same activities in each center for an entire week, while others like to change the activities a couple times a week.

You can pick and choose the activities that suit you and your classroom best. For example, maybe some of the small group ideas would be better done during your whole group time. You may decide to use some of the small group ideas during center time. Even though the plans are listed as one week, there are really enough activities to encompass an additional week or two if you incorporate non-themed activities.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Nuts and Bolts Match Up

Give half the kids nuts, and give the other half of the kids bolts. Children work together to find the match to

what they’re holding.

Robot Rhymes Make a robot out of a cardboard box. Feed the robot objects that rhyme.

Small Group Science Small Group Math

Robot Maker Space Give kids cardboard boxes and collage

materials and let them create their own robots.

Robot Roll and Graph Roll the robot cube. Then add to the

graphing sheet. Once done, make observations (which had the most,

which had the least, etc.). Children can play this as a group, in pairs, or

individually.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Dancing Robots Song

Listen and watch this song about dancing robots. Then let your class

turn into dancing robots!

Beginning Sounds Use the cardboard box robot from the other day. Feed the robot objects that

start with the /r/ sound.


Tin Can Robots

Use tin cans, magnets, and craft materials to create tin can robots.

Extend this by using the magnets to determine other items that are

magnetic.

Felt Shape Robots Cut basic shapes out of felt. Children can assemble their own robots using

these felt shapes (on a felt board or a larger piece of felt).

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Robot Writing

Work together to create a story about a robot with a special talent.

Emergent Reader . Make an easy reader about colorful robots. Choose whichever printable

reader suits the children best.


Explore Simple Circuits Delve into basic electricity with this

activity. If the materials aren’t available to you, create a list of items

that use electricity.

Nuts and Bolts Patterns Use nuts, bolts, and any other “robot

parts” you have on-hand (like washers or toy gears). Explore

different kinds of patterns (AB, ABC, ABB, etc.).

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Robot Rhyming Game

Tell the children that you’re going to play a rhyming game. They get to

pretend to be robots. When they hear two words that rhyme, the robots walk

around (or dance). When the two words said don’t rhyme, they have to

be robots standing still.

Robot Class Book Turn your class into robots! Each child gets a page. Have the children draw a

picture of themselves as robots. Write “(Name) is a robot.” on the pages. Add a picture of each person’s face to the robot. Combine the pages to make a class book. Be sure to place it in the

reading center.


Balancing Robot Use the printable robot to explore

balancing.

Robot Shape Creations Cut basic shapes out of construction

paper. Have kids create a robot out of the shapes. Count how many of each

shape they used.

Materials Read Aloud Nuts, bolts, and washers; scale Your Very Own Robot

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Letter Matching Robots

Use the printable robot letter cards for this activity. Choose some

uppercase cards, along with their lowercase counterparts. Children work together to match up the letters. Make

a game of it, asking the kids to walk like robots if they have certain letters

(prompt by letter names, letter sounds, words that start with those

letters, etc.).

Robot Writing Tray Put nuts, bolts, washers, etc. into a

tray. Alternatively, dye sensory materials (like beans) metallic colors. Children can use their fingers or a toy

robot to make marks. Use the printable letter cards as prompts.


Robot Body Puzzles Build the robot puzzles, discussing

different body parts. Compare to the human body.

Weigh Nuts and Bolts Use a scale to weigh varying amounts

of nuts and bolts. Count and make observations each time.




Centers Arts & Crafts

Collaborative robot – Make a giant robot out of large cardboard boxes and decorates as a collaborative project throughout the week.

Painting with gears – Use toy or real gears for process art. This can also be done with nuts and bolts.

Science Tin can robots – Create various robots with the tin cans and magnets.

Magnet tray – Place magnets, magnetic items, and non-magnetic items on a tray. Children can explore what is magnetic and what isn’t. Observations can be recorded in a science journal.

Pretend Play Robot factory – Make robot vests and pretend to be robots.

Literacy Robot letter cards – Children can put the cards in alphabetical order, match the letters, or make words.

Nuts and bolts ABCs – Add uppercase letters to nuts and lowercase letters to bolts. Have children match them and assemble.

Centers Math

Number cards – Place robot number cards on a tray. Children can put them in numerical order, count them, sort them, etc. Add nuts and bolts to explore one-to-one correspondence.

Sorting and matching – Sort nuts and bolts by type and size. Order from largest to smallest.

Sensory Robot sensory bin – Place a base of black beans into a bin. Add metallic pipe cleaners, nuts, bolts, and any other “robot parts” on-hand. Place magnets, cups, and spoons next to the sensory bin.

Robot sensory bottle – Use a plastic bottle and nuts/bolts to create an interactive discovery bottle. Kids can pour the contents into a sensory bin or tray, in addition to exploring the bottle while it is full.

Building Build a robot – Tape robot features to wooden blocks (head, legs, arms, etc.). Put the blocks together to make one robot.

Robot small world – Tape children’s drawings to blocks. Alternatively, tape printable robots to the blocks. Create a robot small world for the children to pretend with. Add glass gems, tin foil, etc. to the area.
